Talk:Luther/Redirect talk
Redirected?
[edit]The history of this page is screwy--the article has been redirected to Martin Luther but this talk page has been redirected to Luther (surname). Since there's been some controversy over how the article should be redirected, it would make sense to keep the talk page here instead of on a completely different page. Do not redirect to Martin Luther

I strongly disagree with redirecting this page to Martin Luther. There are too many people named Luther, as well as movies, TV shows, etc. with "Luther" as their title to redirect this page to one person's page instead of to Luther (disambiguation). In fact, just today I was looking for one of those and it wasn't showing up in the search box and this redirect only made it worse; I realize there's a link to the DAB page on the ML page, but I was so confused as to why I couldn't find the TV show that I didn't even see it until several hours later--and I've been editing for 5 years. I imagine newcomers looking for another person named Luther, for the movie or TV show, or for the name itself would not be able to guess which parenthetical tag to use to find the title. (Try typing Luther in the search engine--I don't get any parenthetical choices listed--if I didn't know how articles are named, I'd be lost.) I changed the redirect--as have several others over the past two years--but it was reverted again. So now I'm asking for a discussion of this question. Should this page be directed to Martin Luther or to the DAB page? And if not to the DAB page, how do we get those parenthetical article titles to show up in the search box? - I agree that the dab page is probably the best target. I've got no idea how to alter what the search box says, although Luther (TV series) shows up when you get as far as entering "Luther (T" or "Luther T" (it seems parentheses are ignored for pre-fill purposes) - I think Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) may be the best place to get a greater understanding of how it works. For practical purposes though, all the Luther (parenthetical) articles should be listed on the dab page. Thryduulf (talk) 08:44, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
- Agee Luther (disambiguation) is better intuitively. --BoogaLouie (talk) 23:02, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
- Also agree. The DAB page is the best target. Echtoran (talk) 14:22, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
- Concur. While Martin Luther is still possibly(?) the most common single article people are looking for, it is not "more likely than all the others combined" which is suggested as part of the criteria at WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, so this should go straight to the DAB. - I agree too. Luther (disambiguation) is the best target. Headbomb {talk / contribs / physics / books} 04:19, 10 April 2011 (UTC)
- I think this decision should be based on sources, not what individual editors feel. For one, dictionary.com provides Martin Luther as the primary meaning to "Luther". Having said that, I don't have a strong opinion on this. I've never heard of a tv show called "Luther". Cheers, --Dailycare (talk) 20:55, 11 April 2011 (UTC)
- Tend to agree that this might serve best as a dab page. Acknowledging the source above, I would assume the Luther Dictionary would have Martin Luther as the primary topic, but I'm not sure that necessarily can be seen as having a universal viewpoint. There are, I believe, at least a few other people with the same surname, and apparently a few other notable topics as well. Granted, I don't know many of these other presumptive topics, and I don't myself necessarily object to seeing Luther be a redirect to Martin Luther, with a hatnote to that article saying "for other uses, see Luther (disambiguation). - I'd agree that the dab page is the best target. Coverage of Luther in the outside world might lean somewhat towards Martin Luther, but not overwhelmingly so. bobrayner (talk) 17:53, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
- Since this has been open for a while and is unanimous, I've removed the RFC tag and have gone ahead and made the change to the redirect. TechnoSymbiosis (talk) 05:03, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
