Draft status

[edit]

The page did state that she was the first and only female drafted by the NBA. However, Denise Long was drafted by San Francisco in 1969 [1] so the reference appears to be mistaken.--SPhilbrickT 19:00, 13 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

True, the San Francisco Warriors drafted Denise Long with their 13th round pick in the 1969 NBA Draft. However, that selection was voided by the NBA Commissioner shortly after the draft.[2] Therefore, her name is never listed in the 1969 NBA Draft list.[3][4] So, officially Lusia Harris is the first and only female NBA draftee. — Martin tamb (talk) 08:28, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The article should still qualify Harris' status as "first" by mentioning Denise Long's draft situation. There's no reason not to provide a complete answer in the article. By providing full context, this will avoid questions such as the one above. — Myasuda (talk) 13:20, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, I'm going to do that. I just added Long's situation in the 1977 NBA Draft article, will add the same thing here. — Martin tamb (talk) 13:46, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'll review this article shortly. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 21:06, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Here are the issues I found:

  • Ref #3 ("Lucy's Legacy: A Profile of Lusia Harris-Stewart") is a deadlink, and I was unable to find a replacement link for it.
  • In several sections, there are multiple sentences in a row that start with She. Convert a couple to Harris, and modify how others are written to break up the repetition. This is especially relevant in the lead, where every sentence after the first does this.
  • "Harris was born in Minter City, Mississippi to Ethel Harris and Willie Harris, a vegetable farmer." just say Ethel and Willie Harris, unless Ethel's maiden name was in fact the same.
  • "She always had a fierce basketball rivalry with her siblings, playing basketball on a homemade court. She and her siblings attended Amanda Elzy High School in Greenwood, Mississippi." should be cited.
  • "who was starting a collegiate women's team, if she would attend Delta State University, in Cleveland, Mississippi." rm comma after university.
  • "Delta State qualified to the tournament in 1975." build on that slightly, right now just feels flat; what was their record? how was Harris's individual performance? Do this for the other years as well.
  • "They came up against the Mighty Macs of Immaculata University, the premier women's college basketball team of the period," cite needed.
  • "Her college career record was an outstanding 109–6" avoid adjectives like that in an encyclopedic article. "Her college career record was 109-6" works just fine.
  • "Harris scored the first ever points in women's Olympic basketball tournament." who was the opponent in the match?
  • "She never played in the NBA or any other men's basketball league but she played" the second she is superfluous, it can just say '..but played..'

A lot of little things to fix, but no deal-breakers that would warrant a fail. I'll put the article on hold for a week, and will pass it when the issues are fixed. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 03:35, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ref #3 has been replaced with the archived version from the Wayback Machine. I will work on the other points later. Thanks for the review. — MT (talk) 04:33, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Will the other issues be fixed soon? Wizardman Operation Big Bear 00:08, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the kind reminder. I'm caught up in editing a lot of different things that I almost forgot about this GA review. Fixed some of the minor issues and I will do more research on her college career later tonight. — MT (talk) 18:21, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Expanded the College career section a little bit to show more about her individual performance, especially in the finals. I believe all the issues listed above have been fixed. Please let me know whether there is anything more to add, edit, or fixed. Thanks. — MT (talk) 16:23, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Everything looks good now, it definitely reads a lot better. I have no further concerns, so I'll pass the article as a GA. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 17:35, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
