Article split from Our Lady of Lourdes
[edit]The details of these apparitions were initially part of the page Our Lady of Lourdes. However, a user commented (rightly so) that it made that page hard to read and hard to manage. So I moved them here, and gave them structure. Hence it will it will not make sense to try to marge it back into Our Lady of Lourdes. History2007 (talk) 05:14, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
Gaps in time
[edit]Bernadette was asked (by the Lady) to visit the Lady for fifteen days. In this article, there are gaps (missing days) between her visits. There are a few days on which Bernadette did not see the Lady. (Presumably, she did not even go to the grotto on those days. But, that is unclear.) This article should offer some explanation about the gaps in time. Why did Bernadette not visit the grotto on those specific days? Was there some specific reason that kept her from going? Or did she indeed visit on those days, and the vision simply did not happen to appear on those days? This should be clarified in the article. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 12:16, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
- Her mother had forbidden her to go? (see 2.nd appearance) --217.84.85.167 (talk) 16:49, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks. Well, that might account for one or two of the gaps in time. But, it still would not explain the others. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 21:43, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
- In any event, we should say something to explain the gaps, rather than leaving the impression that Bernadette just didn't get around to going sometimes. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 21:47, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
- Looking at this site, it seems the request for 15 days of visits was made on February 18, 1858. (The gaps before that have explanations, but they're just gaps, not missed appointments.) There are two gaps following that date; the first is February 22, 1858, and the second is February 26, 1858, the day on which the stream is said to have begun flowing. On February 22, Bernadette's parents, responding to an interrogation by Monsieur Jacomet, the Police Commissioner, ordered her not to go to the grotto. She however, eventually went (compelled, she said, by an invisible force) but there was no apparition. Similarly, on the 26th, Bernadette showed up at the grotto, but there was no vision. - It seems quite odd -- does it not? -- that the Lady asked Bernadette to appear for 15 days. And, when Bernadette complied, the Lady herself did not show up (on some of those 15 days). That seems strange to me. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 07:06, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
- Perfect. Thanks. The article needs to make clear if: (A) Bernadette did not visit the grotto on those days; or (B) she did indeed visit, but there happened to be no vision on those particular days. Your post seems to indicate it was "B", the latter. In any event, the gaps can easily leave the wrong impression in the mind of the reader. The gaps can be misleading, as they can imply that Bernadette simply did not visit on those days (for whatever reasons). This should be explained and clarified in the article. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 05:23, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
- Also, there are some rather long gaps in time (April to July, for example). That is, extended gaps (i.e., gaps of more than just a day or two). I can't imagine that Bernadette visited the grotto on each day in between, and there was simply no vision on any of those days. So, we should explain: (A) why Bernadette took some "time off" from visiting the grotto; and (B) what prompted her return after these extended absences. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 05:28, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
The fortnight
[edit]I recently discovered this quote from Saint Bernadette, which is somewhat of an "accounting" for the period of the fortnight. "I came back for a fortnight. The vision appeared every day, except one Monday [22 February] and one Friday [26 February]. She repeated to me several times that I was to tell the priests they were to build a Chapel there, and I was to go to the fountain to wash, and that I was to pray for sinners. During this fortnight, she told me three secrets which she forbade me to tell anyone. I have been faithful until now." See: [2]. I listed this in the main article under the March 4th apparition date. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 03:56, 21 March 2016 (UTC)
- Also, to avoid confusion, I discovered that the word "fortnight" means different things in different languages. In some languages, it means "2 weeks" or "14 days". In other languages, it means "15 days". See: fortnight and wikt:fortnight. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 04:05, 21 March 2016 (UTC)
