Corrected names of schools
[edit]This article was written incorrectly in that it reflected only the previous name of the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns; it did not reflect that LA Tech was previously known as 'Louisiana Polytechnic Institute' from 1921 to 1970. I have corrected this inaccuracy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pncomeaux (talk • contribs) 15:29, 26 June 2018 (UTC)
- Also, although LTU had several different names prior to 'Louisiana Polytechnic Institute' only that one was used here to both to simplify things, as well as the fact that since they had that name for +50 years, and it is still very well known in the state of Louisiana....about as well known as their current name.
Allison Foley: please explain why you reverted my edit. If one school's prior name must be listed, then so should the other one. To leave "Louisiana Tech" in all the boxes gives the mistaken impression that this was the school's name back to the 1920's.....when this is very definitely not the case. If this isn't the case, then please give your reason before reverting the edit. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pncomeaux (talk • contribs) 16:02, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Pncomeaux: We go by the common name. This October 20, 1933 article uses a mix of "LA Tech", "Louisiana Polytechnic", "Louisiana Polytechnic Institute" and "Louisiana Tech". That is the only source I can find that uses "Louisiana Polytechnic". Perhaps "Lousisiana Tech" was the common name for the school – my alma mater, Emporia State University, has had five names throughout its 155 years and during its time as the "Kansas State Teachers College", the newspapers often referenced the school as "Emporia State" or "E-State" to differentiate from the other KSTC branches (now Pittsburg State University and Fort Hays State University). With that being said, "Emporia State" and "E-State" didn't really become the common name for the school until around 1974 when it changed its name to "Emporia Kanas State College" as it was transitioning to a university. "Lousisana Tech" is the way to go for now until more sources are found that say otherwise. Maybe Cbl62, Jweiss11, or MisterCake can comment on this matter as they have more expertise in this subject than I do (I'm not a big sports buff!). Corky 18:20, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
- Generally, articles that span the history of an entity over name changes reflect the current name or the name when that entity ceased to be any longer. As for this article, it appears that it treats the rivalry as having gone defunct after 2015 when the two teams were known as "Lousiana Tech" and "Louisiana–Lafayette". I suppose if the rivalry is renewed, that would inform a name change to Louisiana–Louisiana Tech football rivalry.
- It appears that "Louisiana Tech" was the common short name for the Louisiana Tech football team going back to 1921. Nothing changed there in 1970 when the school was renamed from "Louisiana Polytechnic Institute" to "Louisiana Tech University". "Tech" is short for Polytechnic, after all. Prior to June 1921, the school was called "Louisiana Industrial Institute", and it appears the common short name for the football team at the time was "Louisiana Industrial". That would inform a name change for the all the Louisiana Tech season articles from 1901 to 1920. I'm not sure exactly when the fight name "Bulldogs" came into use. The earliest instance of "Louisiana Tech Bulldogs" that I can find on newspapers.com is 1922. I find no hits for "Louisiana Industrial Institute Bulldogs" or "Louisiana Industrial Bulldogs". - The polytechnics can be difficult. Virginia Tech has a period in its history when it's better known as VPI. However, except for maybe very long ago Auburn and API have been pretty interchangeable. I don't know which is the case for Louisiana Tech. My only experience with their history can be seen with the sources on the 1908 LSU and 1925 Tulane teams. Can see the 1908 team was called LII. No mention of the bulldog there, though they claim the mascot predates the football team. Cake (talk) 15:39, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

Article name
[edit]Why is this page using the deprecated (Louisiana-Lafayette) name for Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns? It should be changed to reflect the COMMONNAME of Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns. LINK Airbill (talk) 22:35, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
- @Airbill: Consensus was that the name change would only effect those 2017–present; anything pre-2017 remained Louisiana–Lafayette... see this link for the discussion. The last game for this rivalry was in 2015 with no future games planned. Therefore, the name remains Louisiana–Lafayette. Corky 22:49, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
- The real question is: while LTU was known for the majority of the time of this rivarly as "Louisiana Polytechnic" why is that name not used for games during that period (prior to the change to LTU in 1970)? Can you also point out a discussion where a formal consensus was reached that LTU would be referred to as 'La Tech' from the beginning of time until now? As per Ms. Foley's assertion? Why does one school have to have it's former name used in such a strict manner, while the other school is not? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pncomeaux (talk • contribs) 14:39, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
@Corkythehornetfan: would really like to hear your thoughts on my questions posed above. Thanks! Pncomeaux (talk)
- @Pncomeaux: This has nothing to do with the what this section is about. It is purely about the naming of the article. I will respond with my opinion above, as well as ping others. Corky 17:59, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
