Surname
[edit]For the avoidance of doubt, as lawyers say, I think it is as well to record that our spelling of the lady's surname is correct. There is a bewildering inconsistency in the source material. Baily and Mander & Mitchenson print the name as Réné; Ainger gives René; Joseph, Rollins & Witts, and Who Was Who in the D'Oyly Carte Company give Rene. Happily, Baily reproduces her autograph on p. 389 (Baily, Leslie. The Gilbert and Sullivan Book, London, Cassel & Co, 1956 edition); she had good handwriting, and quite clearly signed herself René. — Tim riley (talk) 11:57, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
- Ah ha! Ainger is right again! Raised the level of the article to C, thanks to Tim riley's excellent referencing. Again, sadly, we have no information about the actresses's early life and late life, or even what she did during those long breaks away from the company. -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:53, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
Could there be an obit for her in a newspaper near Malvern, where she died? -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:58, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
- Very possibly – almost certainly, indeed – but it won't be online. Any volunteers to slog out to the British Library newspaper collection at Colindale? (Non accepto) – Tim riley
