Date of death
[edit]I believe there may be reason to be skeptical of the claim that Beresford died on 30 December 1900. I would first note that there is no citation anywhere to be found in the article that supports this date of death. Second, The New York Times reported on 29 December 1900 that he died "at midnight", i.e., in the night of the 28th into the 29th. This is especially notable, I believe, not only because this is obviously before the 30th but also because The New York Times was often a day late in its reporting around this time, suggesting that Beresford most likely died either on the 28th or the 29th. If we take this reporting to be literally true, then he would have died on the 29th in his home country (or the night of the 28th on the East Coast of the United States, giving enough time for this news to reach the U.S. in time for the 29 December edition of the paper). However, this is at odds with some other sources that seem sufficiently reputable to me: The Victoria Cross and George Cross Association, the Kindred Britain project, and The Peerage website all give 28 December 1900 as his date of death.[1][2][3] I would note that this latter source is already cited in the article for Beresford's son's years of birth and death, and both of the latter two are cited in Beresford's Egyptian Arabic–language article for his date of death. I therefore believe there is sufficient evidence against a date of death of 30 December 1900, but then the question becomes whether it should be 28 December or 29 December instead. Perhaps it would be justified to include both dates (properly supported with citations), especially considering the event reportedly happened exactly at midnight. - addendum: Apparently the peerage source cited above is considered "deprecated". This is noted. However, let it be reiterated that this source is already cited in the article. If it's an issue here on the Talk page, then it is certainly an issue in the article itself. Nabbovirus (talk) 03:05, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
