Confusing

There are some serious issues with the chronology and alot of missing pieces. Here are the issues I encountered:

The article states that the Long Run Massacre occurred on 13 September 1781.
It then states that "a day earlier" (12 September), settlers learned that a raid was planned on their fort.
Then, "Some settlers hesitated for two days", so this would be 14 September? Two days after they heard a raid was planned, which is also one day after the massacre.
It sounds like those settlers that "hesitated" were the ones massacred. How could they have been massacred, if they hesitated until the day after?
Then, "Following the loss of part of their military guard" - wait, there was a military guard? How were they lost?
Then 17 soldiers were killed. Why are these included in the massacre casualties? I'm guessing they were armed and fought back, so seems more of a battle than a massacre. But if reliable sources includes them, then that's fine but should be explained.
