[edit]Question on the John French Sloan talk page. Are JF Sloan and John Sloan Dickey related? Both born in Lack Haven is all I know! Any help appreciated. Smallbones (talk) 03:35, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- The archiotect who designed the LH courthouse was also named Sloan, though he was from Philadelphia. See Samuel Sloan (architect). I do not know the answer though, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 11:49, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
- I don't know either. I do know that one of Lock Haven's businesses in the 20th century was the Dickey-Grugan Hardware Store; it's possible that John Sloan Dickey was related to the hardware store people and that the Sloans and Dickeys were related by marriage. Confirmation of the existence of the hardware store is here in a Williamsport newspaper article. If I find anything else, I'll post a further note. Finetooth (talk) 17:36, 24 January 2012 (UTC)
Layout
[edit]With respect, Beyond My Ken, the changes you made recently to Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, a featured article, are not improvements as defined by Wikipedia style guidelines. The layout you seem to be insisting on violates multiple Manual of Style recommendations found at MOS:IMAGES.
The MOS says: "As a general rule, images should not be set to a larger fixed size than the 220px default (users can adjust this in their preferences)." Lots of exceptions exist, as the MOS makes clear, but the exceptions need to be defensible, at least explained in edit summaries if not discussed with other editors on the article's talk page or elsewhere. You did not use edit summaries for your changes except the last one, the revert of my revert, in which your summary was "Undid revision 626423870 by Finetooth (talk) please don't do that, the article's layot is visually better than it was". This does not make clear what your thinking is on any specific change. The place to do that would be the article's talk page, preferably before making the changes.
The MOS also advises against text sandwiches: "Multiple images in the same article can be staggered right-and-left. However, avoid sandwiching text between two images that face each other, or between an image and infobox, navigation template, or similar." Some of your suggested changes create text sandwiches.
The MOS also suggests placing images within the section they illustrate. Some of your suggested changes cause images to overlap section boundaries.
The best place to discuss issues related to this article is here, on its talk page, where other interested editors may add comments, if they like. Please consider reverting your changes and then, out of consideration for others, suggesting them one by one here. It may be that others will find merit in your suggestions. Finetooth (talk) 19:41, 21 September 2014 (UTC)
- I have undone the edits once again and suggest they are discussed here. Clearly there is a certain amount of personal preference (i.e. subjectivity) to the layout of articles, there is no one right answer, but it is unhelpful to start making masses of changes and then cry "ownership", particuarly when Finetooth has made a reasonable request for discussion, including links to MOS. This is, after all, a featured article. Please continue discussion here to achieve consensus. The Rambling Man (talk) 08:51, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
