Denise E. Pilato (2016). Journal of the Illinois State Historical Societydoi:10.5406/jillistathistsoc.109.4.0374 Interesting article on 1893 fair in Chicago, with some notes on expectations for women inventors eg "Merit, for a woman’s invention, was inextricably linked to how well it reinforced feminine ideals, which were not necessarily merits designating noteworthy technological progress." Any thoughts on this notion? It seems to me to make it less "pebbles on a beach"-y, but the current order has the advantage of putting the US last, which would be tricky to achieve otherwise (South America, at very least, would end up below the US).
