And the dutch pension foundations? they own half of lower manhattan NY..
Removal of external links
[edit]Since we are not a directory I've replaced external links to the foundations with wikilinks. Since these are major foundations we need to be encouraging people to create articles on these subjects, not providing a listing service to unencyclopedic content (which the home websites are). If it's useful to those who would like to start one of these articles the version with links can be found here. -- Siobhan Hansa 12:54, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
INGKA
[edit]INGKA is not listed. I know some people do not consider it to be a foundation, but legally it seems to be. Also, the INGKA wiki article says that it is a foundation. This leads to inconsistency among this wiki article and the INGKA article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.184.222.152 (talk) 07:29, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
yes please list INGKA as it is legally a foundation —Preceding unsigned comment added by Btxtsf (talk • contribs) 03:56, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
Done. I am unsure of one thing however : the nationality. It is owned by Sweden persons but is located in Netherlands. I put its nationality as Sweden and its headquarter in Netherlands. Feel free to change if that looks weird.--Iv (talk) 10:52, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
Changed Sweden to the Netherlands. It's a Dutch foundation. 87.211.120.21 (talk) 15:23, 16 February 2010 (UTC)
Update
[edit]This list is over a year old, no doubt the financial situation of some of the organizations has changed. Would anyone be opposed to me rechecking all the sources and reordering the article if need be and updating the financial numbers? —Charles Edward (Talk | Contribs) 12:20, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
This list excludes "The Open Society Foundation" which has distributed more funds than a great deal of the listed foundations over the past decades. Please update as recommended by the above contributor, or preface that this article does not reflect an accurate depiction of the most endowed foundations. For Wikipedia to be a member institute of driving the philosophical mission of open society to exclude an institution that is by every character of the word a grant-making foundation the same as the rest is quite much. I cite as proof the foundation's own webpage estimating its 3 decade expenditures which I am sure is verifiable in some diligence routine: http://www.opensocietyfoundations.org/expenditures . Per Capita Stat.
[edit]I think this article could be improved by adding a column stating the per capita value of the sovereign wealth fund. It would add a relative perspective from an individual’s view. The difference between the gross values do not give a representation as their purpose as public investment for citizens. This is the same reason both GDP and GDP Per Capita figures are typically given. I tried to do this for Kuwait and the combined $ for China, the result is very revealing.
$ 851 --- China Per Capita
$ 89,576 --- Kuwait Per Capita

Religious Charities??
[edit]The Church of England is on this list, I have to assume the Roman Catholic Church should be there too. They own more real estate, schools, and hospitals than any organization in the world... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 38.117.238.62 (talk) 20:33, 16 July 2012 (UTC)
30 not 29; Valuation problem too
[edit]I don't know what criteria were used to set the count at 29 for determining the list of wealthiest charitable foundations. It is peculiar. Fortunately, someone saw fit to add a thirtieth member to the list, so I am going to change the prose portion at the beginning of the list from 29 to 30.
Also, this list is of limited value, as world's "wealthiest charitable foundations" varies from year to year. Whomever thought to mention that it was calculated in 2012 U.S. dollars, and the exact date, was thinking ahead, but that still doesn't address the problem of trying to keep this list up to date. It should be possible, if done programmatically. If not, it is misleading. I'll leave that for someone else to contend with though. --FeralOink (talk) 15:22, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
- I just noticed that at least half of the sources for the list pre-date 24 June 2012, which is given as the date of valuation. In fact, they range from 2008 to various dates in 2012. This renders the entire list invalid, unless a previous editor recalculated all the valuations as of 24 June 2012. No, there are still problems with that approach. Sigh. --FeralOink (talk) 15:45, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
The Duke Endowment
[edit]The Duke Endowment is listed as having $3.4 billion in assets. Not sure why it's not listed. Just wanted to mention it. --168.215.131.150 (talk) 14:33, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

Nonprofits by donations

Robert Bosch Foundation
[edit]The Robert Bosch Foundation ("ROBERT BOSCH STIFTUNG GMBH") is only listed with assets worth 6.9 billion dollars. According to BOSCH ZAHLEN the ROBERT BOSCH GMBH earned 3.537 billion Euros after taxes, that is 3.774 billion 2015 dollars (IRS). The Robert Bosch Foundation owned 93 percent of the ROBERT BOSCH GMBH. The ROBERT BOSCH GMBH ("Bosch") mainly produces auto and truck parts. It is not listed on any stock exchange. There are three comparable competitors to Bosch; Continental, Denso and Bridgestone. The average market cap and net profit relation of the three companies is 11.04, every dollar earned equals 11.04 dollars in market cap. That would mean Bosch was worth 41.333 billion 2015 dollars (IRS) in 2015, if you use that calculation. The Robert Bosch Foundation would have had assets worth 38.440 billion dollars in 2015. Your list can not be correct. I can give you a full calculation if you want.

Open Society Foundations
[edit]Should Soros's Open Society Foundations be mentioned here? It apparently has endowment of $19.6B but I'm not sure it fits the inclusion criteria.--Salix alba (talk): 13:59, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Rename Article
[edit]After reviewing the list I noticed that that there are more than just foundations listed and thought it might be better to relabel the article "List of wealthiest charitable non-profit organizations" instead of removing the non-foundations. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.48.191.148 (talk) 20:34, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
Agree that the title is not fully inclusive - ideally to be reviewed. What about something along the lines of „List of 50 largest philanthropic entities“ (philanthropic given the market perception of fund distribution / entities given that trusts technically don‘t have a legal personality & 50 being a nice round number and within reach when adding a few additional stakeholders). Wildflowerhoney (talk) 11:24, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
The danish currency is DKK not Euro

Update required?
[edit]Hi all,
There seem to be some discrepancies between this and related pages. Also wondering if the current #1 can really be listed as lead entity given that it seems to be a holding foundation covering both profit & philanthropy aspects.
Thanks for your two cents on how to best proceed to update things. Wildflowerhoney (talk) 19:18, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
Two German Foundations missing
[edit]There are two missing foundations with more than 2 Billion Euro endowment. The Klaus Tschira Foundation with 4.091 Billion Euro[2] and the Dietmar Hopp Foundation with 5.9 Billion Euro[3]. Unfortunately both foundations do no proper reporting and hold their endowment in fluctuating SAP Shares. --Newt713 (talk) 11:10, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
Agree, as well as some other big European Foundations such as Fundación ”la Caixa”, Stavros Niarchos Foundation, etc. (& possibly also Donor-Advised Fund such as Fidelity Charitable?)
Would you be able to add the two German Foundations to the list and add referencing llinks?
On a more general note, some of the entities listed are holding foundations with assets not fully used for charitable purposes - ideally to be reviewed.
In any case, what about aiming to stretch the list to having an up-to-date overview of the „50 wealthiest foundations & co.“ (just additional seven additions required) & possibly include logos? Wildflowerhoney (talk) 15:29, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

Update, Top 50 + Distribution column?
[edit]Hi everyone,
What would be your thoughts re: a collective effort to update the list, make it a top 50 (+ logo?) and add a column with charitable distributions?
As for #1 in the list (a holding foundation), I‘m also not really certain if the ranking is accurate given that only parts of its assets are deployed for philanthropic purposes.
Best, Wildflowerhoney Wildflowerhoney (talk) 06:01, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
Just 3 foundations left for top 50
[edit]Hi all, we‘re currently at 47 foundations listed. What about adding 3 more to reach 50?
e.g. let‘s add la Caixa” Foundation to the list + 2 others. Wildflowerhoney (talk) 10:43, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
