"on" Iceland?
[edit]Obviously, in English, when you locate something on a sufficiently small island, you say "on [island name]". But if it's massive enough, shouldn't it be "in [island name]" instead? You don't often see usage like "on Ireland" or "on Sicily" or "on Hokkaido" or "on Madagascar." So why "on Iceland?" - Gilgamesh (talk) 00:09, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- Huh. Good point... for some reason "on" sounds perfectly fine to me for Iceland, but would certainly not for Ireland. Guess it depends on whether one primarily perceives the place as a nation or as a geographic entity, so I may suffer from Iceland chauvinism. Probably best to switch to "in" for consistency. --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 00:47, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- I wanted to suggest renaming the article to List of volcanic eruptions in Iceland. But I don't just want to be unilateral about such a thing, but raise the question and seek consensus. - Gilgamesh (talk) 03:23, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- "On" was chosen by Google Translate and I didn't notice until later. My natural speech would be "in", but I wasn't sure about changing it. I am now convinced. Chienlit (talk) 00:17, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
- Yeah, language can be fickle that way. I'll go ahead and rename the article. - Gilgamesh (talk) 03:29, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

- In Icelandic it is 'á Íslandi' = ON Iceland. 195.249.232.63 (talk) 17:13, 4 August 2023 (UTC)

Lists of placenames
[edit]Each Volcanic Zone /chapter 2) has a list of placenames. They were apparently chosen randomly, few were names of volcanoes. There were unknown bays, small glaciers, etc. Hengill (table mountain between Reykjavík and Hveragerði) is listed under RFZ and also under WVZ, do they really overlap?
I have tried to tidy up.
Best regards
