Chebeague Island
[edit]I don't see Chebeague Island listed as a town...? Although it has been one since 2007. johantheghost (talk) 03:21, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
sources and development
[edit]I am seeing some churning of edits in this list-article that add and subtract certain town and city names. No explanations are apparent. One addition was for a place whose article identifies it as a city in Maine, but then the addition is reverted for no reason. If the city is not a city, or if a city doesn't qualify for this list, I would think that should be mentioned. I dunno, is there some master list of city/town names in the state that can be used as a sole source for a single, authoritative list?
Also, the article consists of two separate lists, one organized alphabetically by town giving also county, other organized by county giving towns. Wouldn't a single, sortable table be better, and also allow for another column or two of population or other information?
I would possibly proceed with such a reorganization, but I'd like to understand what are regarded as definitive sources here first. --doncram (talk) 04:03, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
- I live in Argyle Maine which is also not on the list. What is the criteria? Galenyoung (talk) 22:59, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
- Currently the list includes only entities that are officially towns. Cities and plantations each have their own lists. Lewiston being a city and not a town is not included in this list of towns. Argyle being a plantation and not a town is also not included. The current inclusion criterion is mentioned in the first paragraph with a pointer to other lists of places. Doncram, if you are really interested in reformatting this list into a single sortable list (and that you're not here because you noticed that I revert some edits here), that would be a welcome effort from you. There is definitely room for improvement (see for example what I did for Conn. and R.I.). Good luck. --Polaron | Talk 15:02, 29 October 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks Polaron. Yes i did browse later and find List of towns in Connecticut, which provides a sortable table that is substantially better than the current situation here. The situation here actually has no source provided; it does not give a reader confidence that this is a definitive list of the official towns, and it appears it could be an incomplete list, and it therefore seems to call for readers to add information. I think that is a bad situation: if it is a definitive list, that should be made clear, and readers should not be drawn into adding info only to have their contributions abruptly deleted. I notice the link from the first paragraph here goes to a list of places in Maine that is not great, is not very informative. It seems like the whole set of pages on places in Maine could well be revamped, possibly combined into one bigger article covering all types together. A reason for combining is to help readers efficiently find what they are interested in in one place, and it may be useful in Maine especially if the distinctions between types are not very important and/or are not well known.
- About Argyle, Maine, I notice that it does not appear in the planatations list-article. I am sure it should appear in one of these; it currently seems not to. :::I would basically plan to do a sortable table covering the official towns at least, and same for the plantations and same for the cities, possibly all to appear in separate sections in one combined article or possibly kept in separate articles. Other comments about what would be better here would be welcomed. In particular what source is there on the official towns of Maine? Probably it would be good to post notice at WikiProject Maine. I'll look at this all more some time later. --doncram (talk) 15:51, 29 October 2010 (UTC)
- Argyle is apparently a former town that disincorporated in 1938. It is now classified as an unorganized territory. --Polaron | Talk 16:05, 29 October 2010 (UTC)
