Making this article a list/table format
[edit]Some time ago it was suggested that this article should be restructured as a list. I've made a start at User:Rodw/Sandbox/Somtowers but wanted to check whether interested editors this is OK before moving it to article space - any thoughts?— Rod talk 17:06, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
- I've done the change to table format & adding mapping, listed building grades etc - still lots of work to do on heights & ages & some redlinks + some missing photos. I also think it would be good to expand each generation section heading with the key features & the lead.— Rod talk 10:21, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Missing Towers
[edit]I have noticed that some towers are missing from this list - including Cranmore Tower, Glastonbury Tor and The Church of St. Batholemew's in Cranmore. I'm sure there are more. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.220.131.203 (talk) 16:48, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
There are hundreds of others, many of which can be found via Grade I listed buildings in Somerset and its seven sub lists or by visiting the individual article for civil parishes in Somerset eg Cranmore, Somerset. Also the Category:Churches in Somerset may help. The ones included focus on Poyntz-Wright's scheme and its revisions and is described in the classification and dating section of Somerset towers as it would be massive list to include all of the others in anything like to the detail included in this list. Cranmore Tower was not built as part of a church (although it has had recent use by a religious group) so it wouldn't be included, however I would agree Church of St Bartholomew, Cranmore should be added as Poyntz-Wright included it in the Mendip Generation.— Rod talk 17:20, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Merger proposal
[edit]I would suggest that the context and information, particularly relating to classification and dating, included in the Somerset Towers article is needed to help explain this list, and that the contents of the list help to illustrate to descriptions on the other page. Therefore I think it would be more appropriate them into one article largely containing the description as the lead with specific information relating to each generation into a short lead for each section of the list.— Rod talk 19:14, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose I just took a quick refresh of past Talk on these articles and see that in 2008 the original single article was split because it was too long. Do we really want to revert this? Would it not be better perhaps to just add a link at the start of the article, "Main Article: Somerset Towers" ?
- I am also concerned about the titles of the articles. I just added some context to the lead of this article to show that we are talking specifically about church towers here, and not shot towers, follies or any other kind of tower. I tend to think that if they are so well known as 'Somerset towers', then perhaps the title should be capitalised 'Somerset Towers' and this article should be "List of Somerset Towers". This would go some way to help indicate that this is not a list of general towers, and to bind the two articles together. Derek Andrews (talk) 13:48, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
- OK I've removed the banners proposing merger. If you want to rename so that the subject is clearer that is fine by me.— Rod talk 09:12, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
- I have renamed this article. I am not sure now about moving the main article, as I see that Somerset Towers was previously moved to Somerset towers. I have asked the editor if he can explain his rationale for the move. Derek Andrews (talk) 21:46, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
- Somerset Towers would be the name of a book. Somerset towers are the towers themselves. Capitalization convention. --Wetman (talk) 22:18, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
- Looking into this some more, I think maybe the original author has either been misled or has tried to make more of the name than the topic perhaps deserves. I checked using Google books, and most published forms use the lower case. The article uses the capitalised form extensively in the text, and I will fix this shortly.
