New York stations
[edit]We really shouldn't be claiming stations that are actually located in New York! New York is claiming them! We can't both be doing that! Student7 (talk) 15:20, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- No "claiming" is involved. The TV market is Burlington-Plattsburgh, per Nielsen Media Research. These stations "serve" (as described in the intro) two states. WPTZ (DT) transmits from Mount Mansfield. WCFE has a translator in Addison. 121a0012 (talk) 20:32, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- Can the Addison translator be mentioned? And the Mansfield antenna? Thanks.Student7 (talk) 22:09, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- If you find it necessary, you can do so. As for the Addison translator, it should probably be listed under WCFE (which is missing from this list even though it's in the DMA). I just checked; it's now licensed to Monkton rather than Addison and has moved to channel 25 as W25BT. (It was on channel 60 along with two others on the New York side.) It will "flash cut" to DTV. 121a0012 (talk) 07:19, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
Channel 14 W14CK
[edit]Another editor has questioned whether W14CK LP is still an active station. It apparently went off the air for repairs or something November 2007 and he (in Montreal) hasn't been able to receive it since. The flip side of this question is when exactly is a station "off the air/kaput" for purposes of "official" listing here? Is there some "official" step that is taken by the government or simply the fact that some neutral media says it is defunct? Student7 (talk) 21:17, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
- According to FCC records (easily accessible from the FCC Web site), W14CK has been operating since August 2007 on channel 47 from the old (current) channel 22 tower on Mount Mansfield under Special Temporary Authority. W14CK was "displaced" by the construction of WPTZ's permanent DTV facility on channel 14. I'll update accordingly. 121a0012 (talk) 02:55, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you. For the record, the article says, and we believe, that there is (or was) a repeater antenna on Jay Peak in Jay, Vermont (not Newport).Student7 (talk) 12:28, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
- The city of license has nothing to do with the transmitter location (except insofar as a station has to be able to serve its city of license from wherever it transmits). The channel 14 facility probably was located on Jay Peak (you could check the old coordinates in the FCC database to be sure. The channel 47 facility is on Mount Mansfield, according to their FCC filings. (I should point out that the reason they haven't applied for a permanent change of channel is that the FCC currently has a freeze on LPTV/class-A TV modification applications so that the staff can give full attention to the DTV transition.) 121a0012 (talk) 01:36, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- According to the info for W14CK's Special Temporary Authority application (http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/app_det.pl?Application_id=1157153), it expired on 02/01/2008, which means it's off the air right now because it's impossible for them to broadcast on channel 14. --Noname2 (talk) 22:57, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- You make a good point. However, extensions of STAs can be handled informally by the Media Bureau staff, which doesn't always leave any record in the database (I've seen this on a number of occasions). Moreover, a station which is silent for an extended period (more than ten days), the station must notify the FCC, and receive permission for any silent period longer than a month. Given that W14CK's license renewal application is still pending before the FCC, the owners would have to have filed an amendment to that app reflecting that the station had gone silent, and there's no evidence that I can find that they have done so. 121a0012 (talk) 05:44, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
