Temporary note and article deletion
[edit]It is highly likely that editors will wish to delete this article, which has previously been deleted. I included a temporary note in the article, full copy is:
Temporary note: Please do not Speedy Delete or PROD, to save time (as those will be promptly disputed), and to allow fuller discussion by AFD or otherwise. This recreates a list-article that was previously deleted in 2007 ( Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of synagogues in the United States ). This new version may be tested by AFD, however it will turn out now that it will be Kept, as it fits within world-wide List of synagogues and current guidelines and practices. wp:CLN and wp:SALAT fully address many of the previous delete voters' arguments. Please notice there was Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of synagogues resulting in decision to keep / no decision to delete, and there is a world-wide list system now in place, with glaring omission of this U.S. list of notable synagogues. The correct process to recreate this list article by my reading of guidelines is to create it again boldly, possibly endure speedy and PROD (waste of time), then endure AFD again or Deletion Review. A new test case is needed before Deletion Review is appropriate, by my reading of process. Please do not discuss further here but rather comment at Talk.
To facilitate orderly processing, please consider discussing here. --doncram (talk) 10:25, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
- As i half-expected might happen, User:Orlady has come by to dispute the display of the temporary note by hiding it. I restored display of the note, which provides useful links to previous AFD and other pages. I think it is useful to have it displayed on the article, like a custom tag, temporarily, to head off knee-jerk actions like speedy-deletes. Please note this discussion section existed with title specifically chosen to encourage discussion here, rather than edit-warring in the article. Please respect this request to discuss matters here. Orlady, if you get a consensus of some number of editors over the next day or two, all saying that it is just so awful to have a temporary note in mainspace for a few days, then i will agree to remove or hide it. But, the point is to head off drama. You don't have to choose to introduce drama about the note. Please consider just dropping it. --doncram (talk) 17:23, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
- I think now the note served its purpose and I removed it myself. Hopefully any editor wishing to dispute the topic of the list-article will see and consider this discussion here. Enough about the temporary note. Thanks. --doncram (talk) 18:36, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Of course there are other NRHP-listed synagogues that don't have "synagogue" in their name, too. Hope this helps. --doncram (talk) 19:00, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
P.S. Perhaps items here could be stricken out when coverage in the list is verified. --doncram (talk) 19:06, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
- Since you re-created this deleted list, why don't you take on the responsibility of populating it with these entries? Jayjg (talk) 21:49, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
- Umm, i am helping here. To be glib, since Wikipedia is not complete, why don't you take on the responsibility of completing it? If you want to help here, please do. --doncram (talk) 22:06, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not even sure this list should exist. You, on the other hand, re-created it, and have no trouble listing all sorts of synagogues to be added on its Talk: page. It would make more sense for you to just put them in the article instead, don't you think? Jayjg (talk) 22:11, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
- Okay, you don't want to help, and you're on the sidelines, presumably considering opening an AFD as you have for other articles where i was trying to help. Thanks for your input. Perhaps you have discouraged the other editor (who actually seemed to appreciate my involvement) and perhaps you will dissuade future possible editors from contributing, too. I actually wonder: are you trying to drive me away? --doncram (talk) 05:19, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

Scope of article
[edit]This article had many of the same problems that List of Jewish communities in North America had. So many, in fact, that if this resumes, I would suggest any editor who sees this to compare the behavior to that at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Gylatshalit. Anyway...
All articles must be sourced. As a convenience, sources for list articles like this are often at the linked articles, instead of the list itself. This is not an excuse to include unsourced content. Articles must be based on reliable, external sources, and to preserve neutrality, those sources should be independent of the subject they discuss. This is a central aspect of Wikipedia's mission: Wikipedia:Verifiability. Another part of that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. This is obvious, but it means that Wikipedia is not a directory. We cannot even begin to include a listing of every single synagogue in the country. For one thing, that list would be constantly changing. For another, not every synagogue is going to be encyclopedically significant. For yet another, this would attract spam and promotional content. This last one has already started to happen. Good intentions or not, including promotional wording and links to a synagogue's site is totally unacceptable.
To prevent these problems from growing out of hand, I have trimmed the list down (again) to only those entries which already have Wikipedia articles. I hope this explains why, thanks. Grayfell (talk) 08:11, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
Former synagogues
[edit]There are a large number of synagogue buildings in the United States that have articles on them by virtue of them being listed on the NRHP. Should this article include those buildings that were synagogues that are no longer used for that purpose? If so, should they be clearly marked as such? Or should it contain only 'active' synagogue buildings? Thoughts and suggestions are welcome? Rangasyd (talk) 02:34, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
