Thumbnails
[edit]The thumbnails seem to affect the list (at least on Firefox 1.5) and it gets narrower after the Colorado beetle. Perhaps the images should be moved to galleries between list sections and kept in top level list entries alone. Shyamal 07:01, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
"Common names"
[edit]Given the admission that many of the so-called "common names" of families are not actually in general use, I don't think we can include them here. I have therefore culled the list significantly of these names, leaving in only the ones with which I was familiar. Since I am not a coleopterist, there may be many generally widespread names that I have deleted and which could be reinstated. Many of them are, however, clearly inventions and have no place in Wikipedia. I would also recommend that unless a really widespread name is in existence we use the scientific name, which practice is promoted by only having links on the scientific names and not on the common names. Invented vernacular names are a curse on systematics and should be avoided wherever possible. --Stemonitis 13:56, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
Two more families ?
[edit]Cyathoceridae and Urodontidae are included in James K. Liebherr & Joseph V. McHugh (2003) in "Encyclopedia of Insects" (Resh & Carde, Eds.) based on Lawrence, J. F., and Britton, E. B. (1994). “Australian Beetles.” Melbourne University Press, Melbourne, Australia. Shyamal (talk) 04:17, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
Additions and corrections to Bouchard et al. (2011)
[edit]Just earlier this year, Bouchard and Bousquet published some additions and corrections to "Family-group names in Coleoptera (Insecta)".[1] I thought it might be helpful to raise awareness of this publication so that beetle articles on Wikipedia can be updated accordingly, and it is definitely relevant for this article at least.
Changes made in Bouchard and Bousquet (2020) include:
- Suborder Archostemata now includes the superfamilies Cupedoidea, †Asiocoleoidea, †Rhombocoleoidea and †Schizocoleoidea (formerly †Schizophoroidea). The latter three are currently under Myxophaga in this page.
- Superfamily Cupedoidea contains all eight families currently listed under Archostemata in this page.
- †Schizophoroidea Ponomarenko, 1968 is replaced with †Schizocoleoidea Rohdendorf, 1961
- †Schizophoridae Ponomarenko, 1968 is replaced with †Phoroschizidae Bouchard and Bousquet, nomen novum (Schizophorus Ponomarenko, 1968 was a junior homonym of Schizophorus Balashova, 1953 in Trilobita, so it was replaced with Phoroschizus Bouchard and Bousquet, nomen novum)
- Suborder Myxophaga now only includes the superfamilies Lepiceroidea and Sphaeriusoidea.
- In suborder Adephaga:
- †Tritarsidae Hong, 2002 is replaced with †Tritarsusidae Hong, 2002.
- In suborder Polyphaga:
- In infraorder/series Scarabaeiformia:
- The authority of Glaresidae is corrected to "Prudhomme de Borre, 1886" instead of "Kolbe, 1905".
- The authority of Ochodaeidae is corrected to "Streubel, 1846" instead of "Mulsant and Rey, 1871".
- In infraorder/series Elateriformia:
- The superfamily Byrrhoidea now includes the family Protelmidae Jeannel, 1950, which is listed above Elmidae.
- The authority of Brachypsectridae is corrected to "Horn, 1881" instead of "LeConte and Horn, 1883".
- In infraorder/series Cucujiformia:
- The authority of Akalyptoischiidae is corrected to "Lord, Hartley, Lawrence, McHugh, Whiting and Miller, 2010" (Whiting was missing from the list of authors previously).
- The authority of Ripiphoridae is corrected to "Laporte, 1840" instead of "Gemminger, 1870 (1855)".
- The authority of Mycteridae is corrected to "Perty, 1840" instead of "Oken, 1843".
- In infraorder/series Scarabaeiformia:
There are also many other changes of this sort made to family group names with ranks lower than family. Monster Iestyn (talk) 17:29, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Title change
[edit]Considering other articles of similar composition, such as Taxonomy of Protista and Taxonomy of the Orchidaceae, perhaps we should change the name of this article to Taxonomy of beetles or even Taxonomy of Coleoptera. Thoughts? Anyone in favor? —Snoteleks 🦠 09:44, 4 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Snoteleks: Makes sense to me, I'm in favour. Monster Iestyn (talk) 14:53, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
