[edit]This is going to be a big list. I didn't realise the sheer numbers of SI's per year. --Kurando | ^_^ 13:25, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
- Yes. Each year (recently) has had a couple of thousand! Perhaps it would be better to have one for each year. The earlier days of SIs might have one page for 5 or 6 years if there aren't many published. This page could then become largely a link page. Whilst some people might say that this creates unnecessary pages, I think it is useful to break it down to avoid the pages becoming too unwieldy. In addition, we could provide a link to all pages published on the H.M.S.O. website, i.e. all SIs published from 1987 onwards, as most individual SIs are probably not noteworthy to have a page on their own. Some, however, are likely to be important enough. Richard B 13:42, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
- I've created the page List of Statutory Instruments of the United Kingdom 1987. Won't be difficult to do the same for other years. I set up a spreadsheet to wikify the information from the OPSI website. Richard B 14:24, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
- That year on its own is over 200k, it may even be necessary to subdivide individual years, which is a shame. Kurando | ^_^ 14:46, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
- Now created List of Statutory Instruments of the United Kingdom 1988. It's slightly larger. 200k should be reasonably easy for most internet connections these days. (1987 = 1468 SIs, 1988 = 1558). 2005 and recent years might be a bit bigger.
- All done from 1987 to 1996 now. I think if I create them as single pages, then it can be decided whether there is a need to split them once they're all in there. Richard B 02:03, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
- Would appear that there is a vote for deletion on List of Statutory Instruments of the United Kingdom 1996. Will probably eventually be extended to other lists, including this page. I probably wouldn't bother including any more links. Richard B 00:54, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
SI category
[edit]I noticed that the category I created to hold these lists is "Lists of the Statutory Instruments...". I don't know why I put "the" in the title, should it be changed to the simpler "Lists of Statutory Instruments of the United Kingdom"? Kurando | ^_^ 10:36, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
ELAC notice
[edit]Hi, List of Statutory Instruments of the United Kingdom, 1991 is scheduled for page division. Please contribute in this goal. Thanks: --Sadi Carnot 10:48, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
Orders in council that are not SIs
[edit]Something I've come across in my research into British colonial history is that there have been a number of orders in council made that are not Statutory Instruments in the formal sense, even though they are not substantively different in content. Accordingly, they are not numbered, although I believe they have nevertheless been included in the annual collections of SIs (perhaps in an appendix?).
By way of background:
I'm not sure how many of these instruments there have been, although there can't have been a great number. Protectorates and mandated/trust territories were generally dealt with under the Foreign Jurisdiction Acts, and I believe that most colonies would have been dealt with under the British Settlements Acts or specific Acts of Parliament. However, a small number of colonies established by annexation or cession (rather than settlement) would have fallen through Parliament's net and thus would have been legislated for under the Royal Prerogative. I'm fairly sure that Fiji and the Gilbert and Ellice Islands would both have fallen into this latter group, and (at a guess) the Cape Colony. Possibly also Gibraltar, Hong Kong (before the passage of the Hong Kong Act 1985), and the territory of the Ashanti, to name a few others?
I'm fairly confident that the following are not SIs, to give some concrete examples:
- Fiji Independence Order 1970 [made Sep. 30, 1970]
- Tuvalu Order 1975 [made Sep. 17, 1975]
- Gilbert Islands Order [made Sep. 17, 1975]
I'm not sure if Royal Instructions also fall into this category.
Does anyone have any thoughts on how these should be dealt with?
