NGC 891

[edit]

note: the thumbnail for NGC 891 is a picture of the wrong galaxy (click through to the main article for this galaxy to see what it really looks like) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.119.233.130 (talk) 04:19, 24 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Distance removal

[edit]

I removed the columns with the distances for several reasons:

  • Many of the numbers were unreferenced.
  • Many of the referenced numbers came from bogus references, including amateur astronomy websites. In particular, the seds.org website is unreliable.
  • Extragalactic distances are very uncertain; they are difficult to measure or to calculate with precision. Even the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database has problems. For example, compare their measurement for the distance to the Sombrero Galaxy with what astronomers have measured (as can be found in the references in the Wikipedia article on the Sombrero Galaxy).
  • Formal distances have not been measured to most spiral galaxies. As noted in the example with the Sombrero Galaxy, applying the Hubble law is tricky (given the presence of the Virgo Cluster), so calculations of the distance based on redshift are inappropriate.

Please do not add distances back to this article. At the very least, discuss the situation with me before doing so. Dr. Submillimeter 21:54, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to have distance information even if some data is not accurate. Yelizariev (talk) 12:20, 23 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Can I suggest inclusion of NGC 1672 as a Spiral Galaxy

[edit]

NGC 1672 is a Barred Spiral Galaxy much like NGC 1300, in fact NGC 1672 is refered to as The Barred Galaxy. NGC 1300 is included on this list.

The general Description for NGC 1672:

The center of the galaxy contains a high surface brightness bar, and four filament-like spiral arms extend outward from the ends of this bar. The spiral arms are asymmetric; one of the arms in the northeast part of the disk is significantly brighter than its counterpart on the other side. The spiral arms also contain numerous star formation regions, some of which may be as large as 4′′

I am not as experienced as of yet to change these things myself, particularly when doing an addition to a Boxed Graph. Can someone make the addition of NGC 1672 to this list. This omission is an error. Thanks!

File:NGC 628.jpg Nominated for speedy Deletion

[edit]
An image used in this article, File:NGC 628.jpg, has been nominated for speedy deletion at Wikimedia Commons for the following reason: Copyright violations
What should I do?
Speedy deletions at commons tend to take longer than they do on Wikipedia, so there is no rush to respond. If you feel the deletion can be contested then please do so (commons:COM:SPEEDY has further information). Otherwise consider finding a replacement image before deletion occurs.

Fair use candidate from Commons: File:NGC 628.jpg

[edit]

The file File:NGC 628.jpg, used on this page, has been deleted from Wikimedia Commons and re-uploaded at File:NGC 628.jpg. It should be reviewed to determine if it is compliant with this project's non-free content policy, or else should be deleted and removed from this page. An image used in this article, File:NGC5257+NGC5258-small.jpg, has been nominated for deletion at Wikimedia Commons in the following category: Deletion requests January 2012
What should I do?

Don't panic; a discussion will now take place over on Commons about whether to remove the file. This gives you an opportunity to contest the deletion, although please review Commons guidelines before doing so.

  • If the image is non-free then you may need to upload it to Wikipedia (Commons does not allow fair use)
  • If the image isn't freely licensed and there is no fair use rationale then it cannot be uploaded or used.

Why not the large page?

[edit]

Are all of these in the main list List of galaxies? I suggest expanding List of galaxies with this info.121.166.132.237 (talk) 09:35, 10 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That makes no sense. This page is for spiral galaxies, not all galaxies, so the "large page" is not specialized for spirals, so many of these spirals would not appear there at all. Rather, we should expand this page with the sections of the "large list" like most distant, least distant, most massive, least massive sections. -- 67.70.35.17 (talk) 08:50, 19 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
