Before becoming a French protectorate in 1863 Cambodia was a vassal of both, Annam and Siam, and either Siam and Annam were formal Chinese tributaries. So, nobody in the XIXth regarded Cambodia as an independent state.

Sarawak since its foundation in 1841 was a British protectorate, not a sovereign state.

In 1858 Cakobau claimed of being the Tui Viti, but he wasn't really sovereign of all the isles. Only in 1871 he was acknowledged as king of Fiji.

According to the Wikipedia issue about Bhutan, this state became a kingdom in 1907. So, in 1858 it only was a shubdrungate.

According to the Wikipedia article about Nepal, since 1816 Nepal has become a British protectorate with a permanent resident. Nevertheless, atlases and books of geography during the XIX century regarded Nepal as an independent state.

Montenegro

[edit]

Although many modern historical atlases consider XIX century Montenegro an independent state; however, Atlases, books and Gotha Almanachs in the XIX century regarded Montenegro as an Ottoman protectorate, since it had no foreign policy.

Also the Wikipedia article about Montenegro says its independence has been acknowledged in 1878 in the Conference of Berlin. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.90.46.143 (talk) 16:01, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that Montenegro was probably not a sovereign state in 1858. I'd add that the status of Monaco and Andorra as sovereign states is equally dubious, if not more so. I'd say, though, that semi-independent Ottoman vassals like Montenegro, Serbia, Wallachia, Moldavia, Tunis, and Egypt should perhaps be listed in a separate section of this page. john k (talk) 19:08, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
