List of ranking tournaments?
[edit]Do you think there is any point actually having a list of ranking tournaments here? We have a comprehensive list at List of snooker tournaments so we could just put this link in the "see also" section? I don't see the point in maintaining the same list in two different places. Any objections to scrapping the List_of_snooker_players_by_number_of_ranking_titles#Ranking_tournaments section? Betty Logan (talk) 14:33, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
- If we scrap this section, than we need to explain the abbrevation in the table, thus i think it can remain. Armbrust Talk Contribs 14:44, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
List of winners
[edit]How about showing the active players in bold? For an example you can see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Snooker_Championship#Top_performers_of_the_modern_era Thanks Kvsh5 (talk) 22:40, 22 September 2010 (UTC)
- Good idea. Have made it. Armbrust Talk Contribs 08:22, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
Events that became ranking events
[edit]I feel that anyone reading the list of ranking event winners may be left with a slightly misrepresented truth about the abilities of some of the players, take for example Alex Higgins, for having won Two World Championships and a UK etc, yet recorded as having only one ranking event, it perhaps doesn't show his true talent, even though the facts are entirely correct. Could a third column be added to include events that became ranking events? It would also show Steve Davis' two UK wins before they became ranking events, etc, this would give a better representation of the players while still keeping ranking event wins serperate. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 157.203.254.2 (talk) 20:58, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
- I don't see any need for this, as the goal of this list isn't the "representation of the players" ability. It's a statistical article about events carrying ranking points. Armbrust, B.Ed. WrestleMania XXVIII The Undertaker 20–0 13:27, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
PTC a standard ranking final?
[edit]In a standard ranking final the winner gets at least 5000 points, whereas the winner of the PTC final only gets 3000 points. It's clearly closer to the "minor" tariff of 2000 points than it is to the full tariff of 5000 points. I think it's a good idea to have a separate column for the PTC final since it's different in its nature to the other PTC events, but on the basis of its ranking point allocation I think it should still be classified a minor-ranking event. Betty Logan (talk) 09:49, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
- Well according to this: "Murphy, who has now won four ranking competitions, felt his extra experience was crucial." As Murphy hasn't won 3 minor-ranking events prior to the finals and if World Snooker have summed the both together, than it would be five, thus the only possibility is, that the PTC Final was a standard ranking tournament. It looks like World Snooker interprets tournaments with at least 3000 ranking points as standard ranking tournaments. Armbrust WrestleMania XXVII Undertaker 19–0 10:01, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
Why do minor wins come first?
[edit]Is there a good reason for "minor" wins to appear before "standard" wins in the list of winners? This seems clearly illogical and doesn't read well.
I haven't changed anything as (a) I wanted to check if there was a good reason and (b) I'm not very good with tables, so would be better if someone else could make the change. Martpol (talk) 22:31, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

Neil Robertson's 2016 Riga Masters win and Mark Selby's 2016 Paul Hunter Classic win
[edit]The table accurately reflects that Neil Robertson has won 12 Majors - the 12th title being the 2016 Riga Masters. However, the sub-box detailing the individual tournament wins still shows a total of 11 (ranking wins). The Riga Masters has only this season become a Ranking event - therefore there's currently no way of 'adding' this win as the itemized list doesn't include the Riga tournament. I have no idea how to include it - or I would do it! Woodlandscaley (talk) 08:37, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
Similarly, Marks Selby's 2016 Paul Hunter Classic win is not currently reflected in his 'itemised' list, as the tournament has only just become a ranking event. Woodlandscaley (talk) 20:45, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
Judd Trump's win in the European Masters 2016
[edit]Judd Trump's win is (as outlined in the above entry) also not yet 'added' to his itemized list of wins, due to there currently not being a European masters option. Woodlandscaley (talk) 19:54, 9 October 2016 (UTC)
- Template:Snooker ranking title winners (and preferably the documentation at Template:Snooker ranking title winners/doc needs to be changed. Looks like new sections need adding like:
{{#switch: {{{sm|}}} | 0 = | #default = {{!}} style="text-align:left;"{{!}}[[Shanghai Masters (snooker){{!}}Shanghai Masters]] {{!}}{{!}} colspan="2"{{!}} {{{sm| }}} {{!}}- }}
The "sm" (twice) and "Shanghai Masters (snooker)|Shanghai Masters" need to be changed for the new tournaments. Nigej (talk) 06:50, 10 October 2016 (UTC)
Recent changes
[edit]I have made a number of changes to this page and Template:Snooker ranking title winners (and associated Template:Snooker ranking title winners/doc). I have added entries for Riga Masters (rm), Paul Hunter Classic (phc), European Masters (em) and English Open (eo). I have also changed the template so that it is no longer necessary to include entries where there are no wins (ie lines ending = 0), resulting in a much shorter list. Nigej (talk) 07:44, 30 October 2016 (UTC)
- While using List of snooker players by number of ranking titles for reference, I, being Welsh also, noticed firstly that Mark Williams has won 3 World Masters titles, you have listed 4 events he has won 3 times, none being the world masters.
- So to double check, seeing as I remember him beating Hendry twice
- so I found
- Stephen Hendry won the Masters six times: 1989,1990, 1992, 1995, 1996 & 1999 &
- World Championship 7
- UK Championship 5
- World Open 4
- Welsh Open 3
- British Open 4
- Dubai Classic 3
- European Masters 4
- Scottish Open 3
- Thailand Masters 3
- The above list is also taken from Your Article Source
- As you can see he hasn't won any tournament 6 times according to your list, though he has won the World Masters 6 times.
- I am also concerned regarding totals, now I've seen your interpretation of , ☞,
- Stephen Hendry's 36 Title wins, the fact that he DOES have 36 & he HAS won 6 Masters titles
- makes your Stephen Hendry totals incorrect or at the very least incorrectly displayed under another title?
- Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any queries or need for further information.

- It's quite simple. The Masters is NOT a ranking event. Nigej (talk) 16:14, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
Steve Davis at the UK Championship
[edit]It's been widely reported in recent days tha Ronnie O'Sullivan has equalled Steve Davis' tally of 6 UK Championship titles. Steve Davis' own Wikipedia page confirms this number, but this page says he's only won four. I haven't edited as I'm not sure whether this might indicate another problem with the article, so thought someone more expert than me might want to take a look. Martpol (talk) 07:44, 12 December 2017 (UTC)
Reply:
The UK Championship only became a ranking event from the 1984 tournament (1984/85 snooker season) onwards. So, although Steve Davis (and others - including John Virgo!) will always be credited with those titles, they won't be reflected on this list. Further down the article (section 3), there's a list of all-time ranking tournaments which also reflects the years in which those competitions held ranking status. Woodlandscaley (talk) 08:46, 12 December 2017 (UTC)
- Originally the UK was a "closed" event, restricted to "British residents and passport holders" (https://web.archive.org/web/20100930190022/http://www.cajt.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk:80/uk.html). Since it had restricted entry it was not a ranking event until 1984 when it became "open". Eddie Charlton for instance, didn't play until 1984. A few Canadians played before then - presumably they were resident. Bit like the Masters which is non-ranking because it has a restricted entry. Nigej (talk) 11:00, 12 December 2017 (UTC)
Many thanks - that explains it! Martpol (talk) 14:10, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
Minor ranking events
[edit]I'm thinking the minor ranking events could be removed from the "List of winners" and "Ranking title winners by country" sections and a new section added after these, listing the minor ranking event winners. No one talks about minor ranking wins nowadays and to me their inclusion in the main table just causes complication. Nigej (talk) 09:45, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
I have been bold and make the changes above. 65 of the 69 minor-rankings event were part of the Players Tour Championship and that article gives a complete list of the number of wins by each player (and by country). Seems to me that no one says that Mark Selby has won 17 ranking events and 7 minor-ranking ones too. Planning to add first and last year to each player in the main table. Nigej (talk) 10:28, 30 September 2020 (UTC)
I have made more changes, adding the first and latest years. The whole thing is exceptionally complicated. It's not immediately obvious but each row is actually a separate table. Whether the "shown" information is sufficiently useful to warrant all this complication is doubtful. Nigej (talk) 16:37, 30 September 2020 (UTC)
Numbering players in main table
[edit]There has been an attempt to "rank" the players in the main table "List of winners". This seems to me to be utterly useless. Joe Perry is 38th in this list. Who's interested in that? No one. Nigej (talk) 10:08, 29 September 2020 (UTC)
Chronology of ranking tournaments
[edit]I have removed this section. See WT:SNOOKER#Chronology of ranking tournaments. Nigej (talk) 06:06, 12 August 2021 (UTC)
Ranking title winners by country
[edit]Considering we've removed this sort of thing (representation tables etc) from most articles, and we don't have any sources that actually talk about this, can we remove it? Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 13:23, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
- I'd be happy to delete it. Dull stats IMO. I suspect there's quite a few around still in the snooker articles, eg China Open (snooker). Nigej (talk) 14:06, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
- Fine to keep on articles where the countries are being represented (say the World Cup or whatever). I'd still want a source then. Something like this is uncited trivia Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 17:47, 30 March 2024 (UTC)
