The first rural cemetery West of the Mississippi River

[edit]

Professor Alex Baugh and I make the argument that the Far West burial ground in Caldwell County, Missouri was the oldest rural Cemetery West of the Mississippi established in late 1836. The Mormons built a town from scratch and placed the burial ground just outside the planned city boundaries and it was not adjacent to a church. They were largely New England transplants, so Mount Auburn would not have been unknown to many of them. See: "“That They Might Rest Where the Ashes of the Latter-day Saints Reposed" by Michael S. Riggs and Alexander L. Baugh found at: (byu.edu) 8-MHS_spring2008_Far-West-Missouri-Burial-Ground.pdf (ensignpeakfoundation.org) 216.81.94.73 (talk) 18:10, 2 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
