Congratulations and hello

I just wanted to say that this list is great! Like the List of public art in London, it's a model for what other cities could be doing! We've featured it on our project page for Wikipedia Saves Public Art. This project aims to encourage folks to put information into WP about public artworks. While it seems that many folks here are working on both this list and the London list, I wanted to come here to say that we'd love it if anyone here would become part of the WSPA project, either by reading through the project page and making suggestions for the creation of individual articles or for making lists of public art in their own cities.

Here in the U.S. we have a slight advantage in that in the 1990s many cities were surveyed through a Federal program called SOS!, that project really was the conceptual basis for our project. But the folks that are in the project are not affiliated with the government, but just cultural enthusiasts.

Please consider becoming members of this project and know that you're welcome to have input and advisement--if not leadership--in its development.

Kind regards, --RichardMcCoy (talk) 12:21, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind words! I've finally got round to joining the project. Ham 10:46, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

Splitting off

Although this page is getting pretty comprehensive by now, I think there's a danger of trying to list every single publicly viewable bit of art in Westminster, which would be futile. So I suggest breaking architectural sculpture off into a separate page, where it can be dealt with building by building rather than area by area. There might be a case for keeping the more prominent or notable examples on the main list, e.g. Epstein's Ages of Man, Gill's Prospero and Ariel – though what counts as notable would be up for debate – or alternatively the individual building sections could be linked to prominently in the relevant sections of this list. Ham 10:46, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

I've decided to be bold and creat the article: List of architectural sculpture in Westminster. Ham 12:28, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

An image used in this article, File:Yuri Gagarin statue on the Mall (14 July 2011).jpg, has been nominated for deletion at Wikimedia Commons in the following category: Deletion requests July 2011
What should I do?
A discussion will now take place over on Commons about whether to remove the file. If you feel the deletion can be contested then please do so (commons:COM:SPEEDY has further information). Otherwise consider finding a replacement image before deletion occurs.

Banksy "Shop Until You Drop"

Should Baanksy's art in Barlow Lane, Mayfair be here? QuentinUK (talk) 22:38, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Excellent idea! Ham 17:46, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

Genghis Khan sculpture at Marble Arch

Hi, I found that the list is missing Genghis Khan sculpture situated at Marble Arch. Also, I selfishly change several images which I think have better technique value than the previous, however if you don't agree, feel free to revert. And maybe it might be really cool add one more raw to the table with link to Commons gallery for each statue (e.g. as we did it on Czech Wikipedia). What do you think?

PS: I will slowly upload more photos, keep this page update :) Regards --Chmee2 (talk) 15:23, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi, the Genghis Khan sculpture is part of the City of Sculpture project of temporary installations, so unless it later becomes a permanent fixture (as Still Water did) it shouldn't go on this page. The commonscat idea is brilliant – perhaps slightly smaller icons than in the Czech version, though? Looking forward to seeing more pictures! :) Ham 07:58, 18 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for clarification, I see. I have nothing against smaller icons. Do you want to found the template or do I try? Also you can maybe suggest position in table where add new section for it (and when I will upload next dose of images, I'll fill it on proper place in table). Regards --Chmee2 (talk) 20:41, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
Hi Chmee, sorry for not seeing your reply earlier. I've created Template:Commons category-icon and have tried it out on the Aldwych / Strand section. Creating new a column squashed the existing content so I've experimented with putting the icon under the title of each applicable work. If I had more formatting skills I'd try to get the icon in the bottom-right corner of the image or aligned just to the right of the titles, but this is the best I can come up with. Just for fun: it seems that the Google Maps van was passing the gallery which supplied the Genghis Khan statue on its installation day in June 2012: See here. Ham (talk) 13:33, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

@ Ham: hehe, very cool finding :)! Regards --Chmee2 (talk) 15:24, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

Suggestions

Four Lions

Is "Four Lions" the name of the artwork? If so, it should be italicized, yes? ----Another Believer (Talk) 18:07, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

@Another Believer: It isn't really a title, so I've changed "lions" to lowercase. Ham (talk) 20:40, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

Knife edge two piece videos

How it looks

this video has a CC licence. Worth converting, uploading & putting this in the sculpture's article and in place of the still image in this list? JMiall 20:51, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

@JMiall: Well spotted, although I don't think there would be any space for it here‍—‌but it's definitely one for the article Knife Edge Two Piece 1962–65. Ham (talk) 07:07, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
I've uploaded (File:Conservation-of-henry-moores-bronze-sculpture-knife-edge-two-piece.webm) and put in the article. I don't think the space is particularly an issue for this list as the same size thumbnail as the other photos could still be used but pop up to the larger video when clicked in the same way that you get a larger version of the photos when you click on them. JMiall 11:56, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
@JMiall: The sculpture is barely visible in the table when the file is reduced to 75px wide‍—‌see the top-right hand corner of this section. Ham (talk) 13:31, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
About as large as possible.
yes, the triangle covers too much up of the centre of the image. This version has an image of the sculpture that fills more of the frame. Possibly the photo & video could be stacked? JMiall 14:21, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
Actually, it turns out stacking works really well. Thanks for thinking of that! Ham (talk) 20:08, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

Article is getting too big; probably should be split

This article landed in Category:Pages where template include size is exceeded by transcluding too much content. I temporarily removed it from that problem category by commenting out the {{LB Westminster}} navigation template, which was not being transcluded anyway, but realistically I think it should be split. I'm not sure what the best way to split would be, but List of districts in the City of Westminster suggests a possible 3-way split by former boroughs, or perhaps Works formerly in the borough could be split to a new, smaller article, which would likely grow over time. – Wbm1058 (talk) 22:23, 10 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi @Wbm1058:, I intend to split the article three ways as you've suggested. However, as I intend to use {{Public art row with long notes}} for each individual work, there's a danger that the list for the old, pre-1965 City of Westminster might still transclude too many templates. For that reason I'm experimenting in my sandbox space before splitting the content, which I'm afraid will take some time as there are hundreds of works in the old City of Westminster. I'm doing this manually as it seems like too complicated a job for AutoWikiBrowser, though I'd be glad to be proved wrong by anyone who's more of a dab hand with AWB than me. The first two links don't appear to be broken. I've tried to fix these using the tool – jobs 317 and 318 – but that hasn't worked. Instead, I've reverted the edit. Ham II (talk) 06:58, 23 May 2017 (UTC)}}
