Expand
[edit]Anyone think this should be expanded to include non-police LEAs or non-police forces? ninety:one 12:44, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
BTP
[edit]They must have the largest area in the country because they police 10,000 miles of railway tracks along with 3,000 railway related sites as well as have the powers to serve any territorial force if requested to do so. Which by my reckoning just about covers most of mainland UK as a force area. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.156.27.50 (talk) 15:28, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
- Your incorrect. BTP do not actually have a police area as such. Only territorial police forces do. BTPs natural jurisdiction is related to railway property which entails slivers of land (the width of the rail line) throughout England, Wales & Scotland with small patches at stations and depots. Added up this probably equates to less land area than the average territorial police force. You misunderstand BTPs use of extended jurisdiction to support other forces and equate this to force area. All police forces (nearly) have powers to assist each other, so by your argument all forces cover the whole UK therefore your argument doesn't make sense on many levels. Dibble999 (talk) 16:17, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
- Absolutely, the rail estate is absolutely tiny, and every force can operate in other force areas. ninety:one 20:25, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
Relevance of PNC codes
[edit]An anon editor has added the PNC codes for the various forces. Is this really relevant for an encyclopedia?! It does not reveal any real information nor is of any use to those not within the service who would have access to the codes on PNC anyway. They are merely the PNC systems way of identifying the various forces. This just litters the table with meaningless numbers to the vast majority of readers. I move to delete them. Thoughts? Dibble999 (talk) 22:53, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, not verifiable or encyclopaedic, and of no use to anyone. Removed. ninety:one 23:50, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
numbers
[edit]when the drop list is enabled to ascending and descending the first number is the only one that matters, and the rest come up as hundreds before thousands. I don't know how to fix. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.149.92.172 (talk) 20:39, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
- This is something that I've been wondering about for a while but I've now figured out how to get it to work properly. Kookiethebird (talk) 17:43, 10 March 2013 (UTC)
Police Scotland
[edit]With the new Scottish force in existence from 1st April (2013), can I suggest that rather than simply removing the information for all the old Scottish forces from this page, that instead they are put into a new table giving historical information. Kookiethebird (talk) 20:38, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
- All former scottish police services are mentioned in article Police Scotland. Information about this is included above table. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aight 2009 (talk • contribs) 16:52, 20 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for contacting me. I would prefer to discuss changes to this article on this page, the article's Talk page, so that other people can see what is being discussed and more easily get involved.
- I know that they are mentioned in the article Police Scotland, but that article only lists them, it doesn't give the details such as officer numbers. I would much prefer to keep this information as I find it interesting and think that it's useful to show people, with details, what was before Police Scotland. There is much historical information on Wikipedia, so the fact that this information is now historical is certainly not in itself a reason to remove it.
- I invite other editors to give their opinions before a decision is made about whether to keep it or not. Kookiethebird (talk) 20:15, 20 April 2013 (UTC)
Two more for inclusion?
[edit]Wiki has articles on the Belfast Harbour Police and the Port of Dover Police. Should not these appear on this page?
2.30.170.39 (talk) 18:52, 18 August 2014 (UTC)
Then there is also the Belfast International Airport Constabulary...so make that three?
2.30.182.170 (talk) 13:56, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
And what about the Mersey Tunnels Police? They are already listed on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mersey_Tunnels_Police — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.243.169.41 (talk) 23:16, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
I'm afraid all of those organisations are legally not police forces, hence not part of the list. They are bodies of constables with very limited, non-exclusive jurisdiction. As per the intro to the article this page lists the 45 territorial police forces of the United Kingdom and the 3 specialist police forces. Bowchaser (talk) 09:30, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
Merger proposal
[edit]I propose that Police area be merged into List of police forces of the United Kingdom. The two articles cover essentially the same subject matter, and I see no need for them to be separate. Bazonka (talk) 12:27, 20 April 2016 (UTC)
- The list on the Police area page is certainly redundant, so I've removed that and linked the pages with a 'for' hatnote. For the rest of the page, however, it is usual to keep the history and fuller description separate from the list. There might just about be enough to keep this separate. Klbrain (talk) 13:49, 25 February 2018 (UTC)
There's only one police force
[edit]All divided up into the territorial squads. You don't give a list of 'Armies' do you? One Army divided into divisions / regiments/ etc.. One Police Force divided into divisions / areas etc.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.20.97.145 (talk) 19:53, 28 December 2016 (UTC)
- There isnt just one Police Force. There are several distinct operations and then there are specialist teams and organisations, operating under the broader umbrella of the Police, within which there are a few dozen "Forces".
- And yes, we do segregate the Army. I.e. the "Armed Forces" is a wider group of similarly aligned operations within which falls the Army, the Navy and the "Air Force", within which falls distinct operational forces such as the "Special Forces" (as a blatantly obvious one) who often operate parallel to the existing military structures.
- In common parlance we consider the regional police to be one "Force", but practically they are not and the sources article reflects that. Koncorde (talk) 00:07, 29 December 2016 (UTC)
- @86.20.97.145: I'm afraid you clearly don't have a clue what you're talking about. Some countries have a single police force. Some, including the UK, have more than one. -- Necrothesp (talk) 15:05, 3 January 2017 (UTC)

Map pointless
[edit]The map is pretty pointless - awkwardly situated on the page and not labelled, so useless for those unfamiliar with UK geography. I would propose removing it. WisDom-UK (talk) 13:46, 21 October 2019 (UTC)
