Places Names in France (and some German ones, too)
[edit]I'm very curious to find scholaryl etymologies for those places in France, not least of all their explanation as being Saxon. Whoever included them in this list should be aware of the fact that "Odin" was NOT called "Odin" by the Saxons. It's a sound change that only affected North Germanic languages. The Saxon form had retained the "w" at the beginning of the name. Nevertheless, I believe the Vatan one to be even more unlikely. I doubt that there have ever been large numbers of heathen Germanic settlers in central France. It smells much more like superficial homoionymy (not even homonymy) and wishful thinking. It's like the canton of Schwyz being traced back to Swedish settlers. So please let a reference to a trained Toponymist's work follow. Trigaranus (talk) 14:26, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
- BTW my doubts also extend to Sopron and Odenbach, so please, do provide some references. Trigaranus (talk) 14:27, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
Move to 'List of Places Named After Woden' or 'List of Places Named After *Wodanaz'?
[edit]It makes no sense to have the thread named 'List of Places Named After Odin' when the English version is Woden, Woden appears in more placenames than Odin and the correct name for the deity is *Wodanaz anyway. The Mummy (talk) 13:36, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
Is Grimesthorpe in Sheffield (Danelaw) named after Odin?
