Talk:List of phobias/sources
Discredited sources
[edit]There is a large number of online sources whose prime purpose is to attract customers rather than to supply information. Such sites are called content spammers. In the case of specific phobias, with thousands of possible names, the content is often automatically generated from various phobia lists circulated in the internet with minimal customization and often without much thinking, capitalizing on the fact that vast majority of specific phobias have exact same symptoms and methods of treatment. Almost never do these sites supply sources of their content, nor the authors. Therefore these sites cannot be sources of encyclopedic information for Wikipedia, per WP:IRS.
Below are some sites which discredited themselves by publishing outright nonsense, which is a proof of lack of critical oversight of the content. Only 1-2 examples are given per site, but in fact evidence is more numerous.
Once again, since most specific phobias have very similar description, most of the content of these websites is plausible, but there are serious doubts that these descriptions were duly written by serious experts, and their information is correct only coincidentally.

[edit]This website became famous of "Prostitute phobia"[1] and didn't take down their silly webpage after almost five years now:[2]
"It comes down to redirecting your unconscious mind. On the surface, you know your prostitute phobia is illogical. But it has persisted because your subconscious has attached the idea of prostitutes, venereal disease, or stds to all those negative emotions.
(...) Does the thought of prostitutes, venereal disease, or stds make you nauseous? Does it trigger a dry mouth and clammy hands? Does your heart feel like it’s going to pound right out of your chest? Do your legs turn to rubber bands? We can help you get rid of that trauma.
