Fictional characters
[edit]I added Dennis's nbrs & did a major restructure of the section, largely based on the following principles:
- Every Dab entry has exactly one blue link. (It may have an additional red lk, only if the blue link is to an article on a wider topic, and there exists enough information about the entry's topic that, once assembled into at least stub, it would deserve a separate article. BTW, if there's skepticism expressed about that potential, defenders of the red link will probably need to [wikt:put one's money where one's mouth is#Verb|"put their editing skills where their red link is"], as it were, by creating a viable stub article. And unless there's dispute about the new separate article, the newly blue link means the old blue link has to go.)
- The single blue link principle is the most obvious reflection of the purpose of Dab pages in general: to speed access to the page appropriate to filling the reader's purpose in using WP, when that user fails to guess the title of the most appropriate article. They probably want more information than is needed for disambiguating, but that info is at the disambiguated article. Keep the additional information to the minimum that is likely to help select the right entry: the additional parts of the character's name, the program name, the author, or character peculiarities that are likely to be remembered from previous exposure to the character, for instance.

Sublists issue unresolved
[edit]@Doug butler: @Maproom: @Debartolo2917:
To summarize the question for newcomers:
- Regarding subsidiary lists such as Adrian Wilson (disambiguation), should this list include some or all of the Adrians, or is the dab link sufficient? It is unclear which side Maproom favors, so we're currently 2-1 for avoiding the redundancies (me and Debartolo2917 vs Doug butler).
Two points I would like to make:
- Who gets to decide which entries to list here and which to exclude. Why is Adrian Wilson (artist) deemed unworthy compared to the other three Adrians?
- List of people with surname Harris, List of people with surname Smith, List of people with surname Williams, etc. do not list subsidiary entries. List of people with surname Miller is confused; a few sub-entries are listed (most are not), and it is unclear to me why those few were chosen. For the most part, they do not appear to be more significant than many of those who were excluded. Clarityfiend (talk) 06:07, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
- One more point I forgot to mention: WP:CHOKING for articles that are large. Clarityfiend (talk) 06:24, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
- I'm not sure if I'm being misrepresented here. Adrian Wilson (disambiguation) should contain ALL Adrian Wilsons that have articles, and doesn't hurt to have all Adrian Willsons as well.
- Likewise, List of people with surname Wilson should contain all Wilsons that have articles INCLUDING the Adrian Wilsons despite their inclusion in a dab article. Not mutually exclusive. Doug butler (talk) 06:22, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
- I agree with Doug butler on both issues. This is because I believe that we should aim to make things clear and easy for users of the encyclopedia. Redundancies (such as including the same article in Adrian Wilson (disambiguation) and in List of people with surname Wilson) seem harmless. But I have not sought or read any policies or guidelines that may cover the issues. Maproom (talk) 07:45, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
Erasmus Wilson -> William James Erasmus Wilson
[edit]I've added a note linking Erasmus Wilson to William James Erasmus Wilson. As the article says he was "generally known as Sir Erasmus Wilson". I wasted time hunting for Erasmus Wilson, others may in the future. I've not wikilinked to avoid duplication of links, if anyone cares to correct/modify please feel free.
