- 1845 - Franklin's lost expedition, British Arctic expedition that was lost after getting ice bound. A few bodies and other clues were found, but the majority of the expedition was never found.
- 1910 - Cecil Grace, aviator, lost on flight over the North Sea. This is the first disappearance of someone while flying an aeroplane. [1]
- 1930 - Rasmus Villumsen, Alfred Wegener's expeditionary companion, disappeared on the Wegener Peninsula near Ummannaq, Greenland, November 1930. Only Wegener's body was recovered.
- 1949 - Dorothy Forstein, wife of magistrate Jules Forstein, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, whose abduction from her own home on October 18, 1949 and subsequent vanishing remains unsolved and unexplained. [2] [3]
- 1950 - Raymond Maufrais was a French journalist and explorer. He disappeared in the jungle at the feet of the unexplored Tumuc-Humac Mountains, on the border of French Guiana and Brazil. He parted from a group of hunters on Dec 11th, 1949. His belongings, including his diary were found abandoned on a riverbank in the interior of French Guiana in February, 1950. Despite numerous searches initiated by his father, and reports of a white man who had lost his memory living in the company of an indian tribe in the jungle, he was not heard from again. His harrowing diary, complete up to the point where he abandoned his last meagre supplies and determined to try to reach assistance downstream, was published in an English translation as "Journey Without Return", William Kimber, London, 1953.
- 1955 - Stephen Damman (2), along with his 7-month-old sister, Pamela, disappeared in a stroller which had been left outside a bakery where their mother was shopping. A short time later, the mother found the stroller with only her daughter inside around the corner from the market. In June 2009, the Associated Press reported that a man claiming to be Stephen Damman has come forward and agreed to DNA testing to authenticate his identity (the FBI will be conducting the testing). - 1971 - Lynne Kathryn Schulze (17), freshman student at Middlebury College, Vermont, USA, who vanished on December 10, 1971. Lynne, of Simsbury, Connecticut, USA, was reportedly seen hitchhiking on US Route 7 south of Middlebury shortly thereafter, but this possible sighting is not confirmed. Her case, which remains open under the auspices of the Vermont State Police, has never been solved. - 1973 - Joanne Ratcliffe (11) and Kirste Gordon (4) were abducted from Adelaide Oval in Adelaide and disappeared without trace, in similar circumstances to the Beaumont children disappearance. [5] [6]
- 1976 - Eduardo Moreno Bergaretxe aka "Pertur" was a leading figure of Basque terrorist organization ETA. He disappeared in July 1976 in southern France after meeting two other members of the this organization known as "Pakito" and "Apala". They were both accused of the murder of Pertur, but no evidence could be found. The terrorist organization in turn accused a Spanish paramilitary organization of being responsible of the disappearance. The body was never found.
- 1977 - Mary Boyle (need to disambiguate, current Mary Boyle article is for a different person) six years old was visiting her grandparents in Cashelard, Co Donegal, Ireland, with her family when she went missing on 18th March. [7]
- 1977 - Yutaka Kume (b.1925) believed to have be taken from Japan by North Korea which denies involvement.
- 1978 - Mª Conceição Ricciardi- member of an important family in Portugal disappeared from Lisbon with 33 years.
- 1986 - Juan Pedro Martinez (10), disappeared when the truck in which he was travelling with his family was involved in a multiple car accident near Somosierra, Spain. Both his father and his mother died, but no trace of the son was ever found. As the truck was loaded with sulfuric acid some investigators proposed that the child could have been completely dissolved when the acid was released but scientists later ruled out the idea. [8] Witness of the accident claimed that a van stopped near the overturned truck shortly after the accident and then departed. No evidence has been found. [9]
- 1987 - David Guerrero / David Guerrero Guevara, a child prodigy with a great talent for painting, disappeared in Malaga, Spain while en route to open his first art exhibition. Police suspected of a 70 years old Swiss man residing in the city at the time, but no real evidence was collected before the death of the suspect in 1990. [10]
- 1988 - Stacie Elisabeth Madison and Susan Renee Smalley (18) disappeared from Dallas, Texas. Neither have ever been heard from or seen since. [11] [12]
- 1993 - Antonio Anglés, kidnapper, rapist, torturer and murderer of three teenage girls from Alcasser, Spain in 1992. Avoided capture fleeing to Portugal and then boarding an Irish fishing ship named City of Plymouth, where he was discovered by the crew and imprisoned in a cabin. However, when the ship arrived at Ireland he was no longer there. He is in the Interpol list of most wanted criminals. [13]
- 1993 - Annie McCarrick (26) an American from upstate New York, went missing on March 26 in Ireland. She was last seen walking in Enniskerry, Co Wicklow. She was the first of six women to go missing in the Leinster area in the 90s, the biggest mystery in Irish criminal history.[1]
- 1994 - Sandra Anne Sollie disappeared May 23, 1994 from her home in Rochester, New York while seven months pregnant. [14]
- 1995 - Publio Cordón, Spanish businessman kidnapped by the Marxist terrorist group GRAPO when leaving his office in Saragossa. His family paid 300 million pesetas as ransom after which the terrorists (all currently in prison) claimed to have released Cordón, but he was never seen again. [15]
- 1995 - Jacqueline Levitz, a 62-year-old heiress to a multi-million dollar estate. Levitz disappeared from Vicksburg, Mississippi and is presumed murdered. She was declared legally dead in February 2001.[2]
- 1995 - Morgan Nick (6), was abducted from a little league baseball game by an unidentified man in Alma, Arkansas. She was attending the game with her mother and had joined some friends to catch lightning bugs. A massive investigation has turned up thousands of leads, but still no solid clues to the whereabouts of Morgan Nick or her abductor.[3]
- 1996 - German tourist Egbert Rimkus (34), his girlfriend, Cornelia Meyer (28), his son Georg Weber (10), and Meyer's son Max Meyer (4) disappeared in Anvil Canyon near the southwest corner of Death Valley on July 23, 1996. Their van was spotted from the air on October 21, 1996 two miles east of the entrance to Anvil Canyon. They left a brief message in a log book at the Geologist's cabin - a stone hut in Striped Butte Valley about 2 miles west of the entrance to Anvil Canyon. [16]
- 1997 - Sabrina Aisenberg (5 months) disappeared from her crib in November 1997; her mother, Marlene Aisenberg, informed investigators that she had checked on her at midnight. - 1997 - Kirsten Renee Hatfield (8) was last seen after her mother tucked her in bed. The next morning, when her mother went to wake her up, Kirsten was not in bed. It was believe she was abducted from her room in the middle of the night [4]
- 1999 - Ashley Renae Freeman (16) and her friend Lauria Jaylene Bible (16), both disappeared after a fire occurred in Freeman's trailer house. Both were celebrating Freeman's birthday on the day of their disappearance. The body of Freeman's parents were found; both of whom died of gunshot wounds.[5] This case was covered by Casefile True Crime Podcast in January 2016.
- 2002 - Audrey Herron (Born October 4, 1970, 31 years old at time of disappearance) has been missing since August 29, 2002. She was last seen at about 11:00 p.m., leaving her job at the Columbia-Greene Long Term Health Care Facility in Jefferson Heights, N.Y., where she worked as a nurse. Audrey walked out with coworkers to her vehicle where, after some small talk, she said she “would see them at work Sunday.” Audrey headed west on State Route 23 in a 1994 Black Jeep Grand Cherokee (NY tags reading X233UV). It's about a 30-minute drive from Jefferson Heights to her home in Freehold, where she lived with her husband and three children. She never arrived. Both Audrey and her car have vanished. Immediately after Herron’s disappearance, police and volunteers conducted ground searches by retracing the woman’s possible routes home, covering about 120 miles of roads and trails. Police also used helicopters to trace the routes. In May 2008, Herron’s case was among several included in a deck of New York “cold case” playing cards. The cards — relating to homicides and missing-person cases — were given to jail and prison inmates in hopes they might recognize someone and be able to provide authorities with information. Herron’s card was the jack of diamonds.[6][7]
- 2003 - Tabitha Tuders (13) never caught her school bus, a short walk from her East Nashville, Tennessee home, on the morning of April 29. The bright, happy, well-adjusted family girl has not been heard from since. [18] [19]
- 2003 - Lisa Michelle Hatchell disappeared on 19 July from the street outside her home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A mother of two and a US Army veteran, she disappeared on her 37th birthday following an argument over money with her domestic partner of 12 years. Hatchell had a drug addiction. Her case was not investigated until 2005 and foul play has not been ruled out. Police followed weak leads of reported appearances in Atlanta and New Jersey with no success. [20]
- 2004 - Brianna Maitland, disappeared on March 19 after leaving work in Montgomery, Vermont. The following afternoon, police found her empty car, rear-ended into an abandoned farm building. [21]
- 2004 - Alex Benetton (19), grandson of Benedetto Santapaola better know as Nitto. Last seen with his mother and elder brother in Palermo, Italy. [22]
- 2007 - Lilly Aramburo (23) went missing after leaving her boyfriend's apartment in the Kendall area of Miami, FL (USA). There have been no confirmed sightings of her since she disappeared. [23] [24] [25]
- 2008 - Natalia Timar (18), Hungarian Rotary Club exchange student and her passport, plane ticket back to Hungary and other belongings were found missing from her host family's home in Oneonta, New York, on June 2. More info, <ref>s, pic, etc here and here.
- 2008 - Ani Ashekian (31) Canadian tourist in Hong Kong, missing since November 2008. http://www.findani.com
- 2009 - Jure Sterk (72), Slovenian sailor went missing near Australia after trying to make a new world record as the oldest person to sail around the world and in the smallest yacht yet. He was in regular contact with some of his friends and radio-amateurs around the world. He also made some of the calls for the Slovenian news which were then shown on the Slovenian TV news. In the end of January 2009 it was reported that no one has been able to call him for 12 days and that the radio-amateurs cannot establish contact with him. A merchant ship noticed his yacht around 1100km away from Australian shore but without any life signs on board. Australian coast guard made a pass with an airplane over the yacht but no sign of Jure has been found. Due to bad weather no one was able to land on the yacht. It is now reported that his yacht is probably sailing without control and has already left the Australian territorial waters entering open ocean. He is still being searched but for now his fate remains unknown.
- 2009 - Haleigh Cummings (5) disappeared from her home in Florida before dawn on 10 February. [26] [27]
- 2009 - Amber Dubois (14), a student from Escondido, California, was last seen on the morning of February 13th walking in front of the school on her way to class at Escondido High School.
