Flagged requirement for references

[edit]

Surely the point of determination of references should be the articles to which the individuals on the list link? What kind of references could be attached to this list of people from Bolton - their birth certificates? Reproducing the references on the individual pages would arguably take up more space than the items already on the list. That would spoil the character of the list. Maybe contributors should add 'see article references' in the event that they have verifiable references? Surely this has happened before - any rulings anyone? Tractorboy60 07:22, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's a requirement of any article (or indeed any statement really) on Wikipedia to be referenced (see WP:CITE, WP:V, WP:RS). Suitable references could include autobiographies, biographies, local history books, internet sources, newspaper or magazine articles amongst others. Citing sources is a means of strengthening this article rather than weakinging it, and if sources have been provided in the person's specific webpage, then it wouldn't take long (or do any harm) to reproduce the reference here too. Recent entry tagged dubious / discuss

[edit]

Someone listed an 18 year old website designer under M. I don't think this is sufficiently notable for this page and should be removed. Looks like User:Cayden was right - see history. Tom 12:38, 11 October 2007 (UTC) May I propose that only people with a properly referenced article link i.e. blue link, be listed here? One or two entries will have to be removed unless their benefactors write the necessary articles, but this is, I believe, a necessary compromise if we are to avoid all and sundry putting themselves on here. Tom 13:00, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I totally agree with Tom. The reference for this 18 year website designer is only about the website not the person. Unless there is a clear reference(s) about this person, then they should be removed from the list. Cayden (talk) 13:29, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that only "blue linked" entries should be added here, and that we should maintain the convention of having citation against each person. In addition to this however, WP:BIO is a useful guideline which may help here. Jza84 14:02, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree that only "blue linked" entries should only be added here. There should be some "red" entries allowed for those who don't (yet) have an article. See WP:MOSLIST#Lists_of_people where "reasonable expectation of an article in the future" is mentioned.
There shouldn't be any be any "black" entries (neither blue or red). If someone is notable enough to be on the list, then they should be linked to a "blue" or "red" link. Cayden (talk) 14:53, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Quite; I think an element of balance is required. Certainly by me saying we should only have blue links I meant there should be no black entries. I think this is what Tom is proposing too. But of course, as permitted by guidelines, reasonable red links in the reasonable short term would be ok.
All going well, we could take a look at WP:FL as a standard to strive for here. Jza84 15:20, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Couldn't we have a "pending" section for "red" entries. Then editors would be encouraged to write the articles in order to have a permanent entry. Tom 17:41, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bad source

[edit]

Just a note that the Internet Movie Database is not a reliable source with which to attribute material to because it is an open tertiary source - just like Wikipedia. Citation pointing to this site should be changed asap. -- Jza84 · (talk) 16:18, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm wondering on which Wiki page mentions that IMDb isn't a reliable source? Has there been a vote or consensus on this? Does this mean that every IMDb reference is to be removed from every Wiki biography/article? Cayden (talk) 00:15, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There is a specific page somewhere that lists it, but I'm unsure where exactly. An admin would probably know. It's certainly not a reliable source, and discouraged (or rather banned!) because it is open source. I know that's a real pain (I found this out myself the hard way a while back) but going forwards, the article just won't stand up using that source. -- Jza84 · (talk) 00:51, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Somewhat ironic that one open source should criticise another open source for same reasons as Wikipedia itself is criticised. If they were worried about the accuracy of IMDB then you would have thought the templates would have been removed. (Wikipedia:IMDb. --jmb 08:07, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The best thing I feel at the moment is to keep these IMDb templates until Wikipedia gives a clear message that they are to be removed/banned. If any individuals on the list have only a IMDb reference, then add a second reference to back up the first. This would strengthen the article as a whole. P J Proby

[edit]

Actually if you do a GOOGLE search it does shows plenty of references to him living in Bolton for a time though not sure whether it merits adding to the list of people from Bolton. --jmb (talk) 17:31, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you. For anyone to live in Bolton for just a year or two, however notable they are, doesn't merit to be on the list. Also the way the entry wasn't done well and so I deleted it. Maybe I was a bit hasty. Perhaps he does belong on the list and the entry would be like this:
  • P. J. Proby (born 1938) singer, songwriter, and actor who at one point lived in Hatfield Road, Bolton in the early 1990s. [plus refs]
I'm quite happy for him to be reinstate on the list. I'd like to know people's thoughts on this. Cayden (talk) 20:56, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kane Coleman

[edit]

Removed Kane Coleman. He isn't famous... at least he doesn't turn up on any search engine results. He discribed himself as "a small time local musician". If that's true then he doesn't need to be on the list. I think it's just some guy that decided it'd be cool to have his name on the list. Dharma6662000 (talk) 22:32, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Michael Anderson

[edit]

Nothing to show that notable, no Wikipedia page. Appears to be a vanity entry so candidate for deletion. --jmb (talk) 09:01, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I added a "citation needed" to name so his notability could be shown but it has been deleted without explanation. --jmb (talk) 10:37, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The following have no sources

[edit]

Please add sources before reintroducing them to the article. Nev1 (talk) 23:15, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've just removed about half a dozen unsourced entries. If someone is going to be included in this list, they need to be referenced. Nev1 (talk) 23:54, 17 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
