This article should not be speedily deleted for lack of asserted importance because list articles are common in Wikipedia. All people on the list are considered notable and have their own articles, having met WP:N. — Paul McDonald (talk) 05:35, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
I proposed for deletion; notability of the people themselves is not sufficient. There is already a List of people from Kansas, which should be sufficient. No reason is given why Republic County, Kansas is notable enough to merit such a list. --Karl.brown (talk) 05:38, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
- For starters, there are people on this list that are not on the List of people from Kansas list. If each county in Kansas (and there are 105 of them) added all notable people to that list, it would become quite large rapidly and have little or no value because it would become too big. There are many other reasons to have lists articles as outlined in WP:CLN. The county is notable, the people on the list are notable, this is a useful list on many levels.--Paul McDonald (talk) 05:47, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
- As far as I can tell, every county in the US is technically 'notable'. But if we created a list of all notable people for every county, city, town, and village in the US, that would be thousands of lists, a real bear to maintain, and frankly of limited value. If there are truly people who are notable because they are somehow associated with this county, then add them to a section within the Republic County article. This article is a better example:[[1]] note that is doesn't list everyone who happened to be born there; it just details citizens who were noteworthy within that county during their lives. In this Republic list, for example Lloyd Cardwell and Edwin C. Johnson both seem to have spent most of their time in Nebraska. Again, the criteria is *not* notability of the people; from WP:MOS:"When establishing membership criteria for a list, ask yourself: If this person/thing/etc., wasn't an X, would it reduce their fame or significance? Would I expect to see this person or thing on a list of X? Is this person or thing a canonical example of some facet of X?" WP:LC also says "The list should originate as a section within that article, and should not be broken out into a separate article until it becomes so long as to be disproportionate to the rest of the article." Thus I'd suggest that these county-notable lists be merged into the county articles as a separate section, and focus on people who are really notable for having done something for that county, not just having happened to have been born there. In addition, per WP:LISTN, "A list topic is considered notable if it has been discussed as a group or set by independent reliable sources." Have you found any independent sources that reference people from Republic County (or any of the other articles you've created)? --Karl.brown (talk) 06:17, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
- You've made some arguments here, and I supposed I could address them directly. Your "list size" argument has a simple response--Wikipedia is far from complete. County histories are topics of research by state historical societies among other organizations, so yes there is a reason to consider the group notable because it has been discussed as a group or set by independent reliable sources. And finally, that there would be too many list articles for each county and/or city--that's why Wikipedia has so many volunteers. But in any event, these arguments you have made (plus any others you come up with in the future) should best be handed at articles for deletion rather than as a speedy deletion.--Paul McDonald (talk) 12:28, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Ok thanks, I agree we should move away from speedy. I have thus removed the speedy deletion tag, and moved this over to WP:AFD Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/List_of_people_from_Republic_County,_Kansas. I didn't copy over your responses here, I figured you could re-compose a response since it is now an AFD discussion. Thanks. --Karl.brown (talk) 13:00, 25 March 2012 (UTC)
