Guidelines

[edit]

In view of recent controversies, perhaps we need to establish some guidelines by consensus. Some suggestions I would throw out are:

  • Linkage to another Wikipedia article: If there is not a Wikipedia article on the person, why not start one, rather than putting a lengthy recitation of the person's accomplishments here?
    • Another possiblility that I have seen used in other Lists of Notable Persons is to put a person for whom there is no article into a separate list on the Talk Page until such time as an article is done on that person. This seems to avoid a lot of controversy and serve as an impetus to create articles.
      • Another possibility would be to require citations for persons for whom there is no article.
  • Multiple categories: If the person qualifies for multiple categories, why not put him or her in the most appropriate one.
  • Categories: If you think the person was miscategorized, why not open it up for discussion

What Constitutes "Notability"

[edit]
  • I would say half the people on this list are local professors, and even graduate students who are by no means famous or notable and worthy of being on this list. Many millions of Americans have written many thesis papers, folks, that doesn't mean who should get your own Wikipedia page. I would not be surprised if most of these local professors added themselves or had TA's add them due to their massive egos. Unless someone stops me, I'm going to dramatically parse down this list.

The Academics section is a lot less than half of the list. The fact that there are academics on the list reflects the fact that Greater Boston has many high ranking universities and many of their professors find Newton an attractive place to live. Your question of notability should be taken up on the talk page of the individual's article. By having an article, the person is deemed notable by WikiPedia. clariosophic (talk) 02:07, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The article on Noam Chomsky states that he lives in Lexington. If so, why is he here? Did he ever live in Newton? Please elucidate. clariosophic (talk) 23:49, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Asimov

[edit]

A good many of these people are not from here. It states that Issac Asimov is from here but he is clearly Russian and there is no occurance of Newton on his page. Sincerely Subzerosmokerain (talk) 01:15, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Isaac Asimov lived (and wrote) in a house on Greenough Street in West Newton for many years, and was American. Hertz1888 (talk) 02:55, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Steven Sera Born in Newton Ma

[edit]

We do not appear to have an article on him or on his band. If you can find reliable sources sources that establish that he or the band meets the guidelines in Wikipedia:Notability (music) then please start articles on them. Verbcatcher (talk) 07:18, 2 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
