The first individual executed in 2023 may consider himself "female", but he is a male human being with male genetics, male anatomy, and is in every way (except his own mind) male. That is a 100% indisputable fact. Why, then, does this page indicate he is a "female"? Do facts matter, or no? CBT91 (talk) 15:17, 4 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
1) This whole series of articles fails to clearly distinguish sex from gender, as all previous articles use the sex terms “male” and “female”, but under a column heading of “Gender” (also used in the Demographics section).
2) Therefore the status quo is incorrect.
3) This person is currently the sole example of an executee with a transgender identity, so I think should be treated as an exception rather than, for example, spawning the creation of separate Sex and Gender columns in the whole series of articles. Nevertheless this person’s gender identity is part of what made them notable in the first place, so should not be ignored.
4) It seems unlikely that sources would separately identify the gender of previous executees in years before the gender debate was mainstream (and indeed a quick spot check just turns up “male” and “female”), and therefore the best we could do would be to infer gender from sex, and therefore we may as well just use Sex as the demographic category.
Therefore I propose two changes:
A) All articles in this series to have Gender changed to Sex.
B) This article to identify the person in question as “Male (transgender woman)”, retaining the current explanatory footnote.
Suggestion I suggest that we place an asterisk next to the name with an explanation that this individual was transgender or identified as female. Also that the individual identified as a male at the time of the crime and conviction. This would be within the guideline.--JOJHutton09:47, 13 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
McLaughlin is a special case, as there a multiple sources spreading doubt about them being actual transgender, especially as they'd benefit from the change. As this is a criminal statistic, what do the prisons databanks say about their sex or gender, if it's not female there, it should at least be noted that they count as a male executee in official statistics Norschweden (talk) 20:15, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
