Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on September 17, 2009.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that the outlying islands of Scotland include the highest sea stack in the British Isles and one of the most isolated islets (pictured) in the oceans of the world?
Current status: Featured list

Fair Isle and Foula

[edit]

I'm surprised that neither of these are included. I know they are both included in List of Shetland islands, and I realise that this list may be designed to include islands not included in other lists, but from an objective point of view I would have thought they should be included here, perhaps with an explanation that they are included in the Shetland list but are, geographically, outliers. Perhaps the criteria for inclusion in this article need to be reconsidered - in some respects, it may be seen as a grab-bag of islands not listed elsewhere rather than having a more rational basis. At the very least, I think that Fair Isle and Foula should be mentioned under "See also". Ghmyrtle (talk) 10:48, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are quite right that they are "outlying" in the sense of being some considerable distance from the main Shetland archipelago. However, they are clearly part of Shetland and generally listed as being so by sources. The rationale for inclusion/exclusion is I hope explained, although there are other options. The "See also" idea is a good one and I will certainly add them to that with a short explanation. Ben MacDui 18:18, 17 August 2010 (UTC).[reply]
PS Out Skerries are about 14 km from Mainland Shetland - although closer to Whalsay. I don't propose they get added too tho'.
Thanks - I'm no expert, but I have fond memories of visiting Foula, circa 1969! Ghmyrtle (talk) 19:03, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Rockall

[edit]

There is no country that disputes the UK claim to the rock of rockall. The UK does not claim an Exclusive Ecomonic Zone around rockall, but it does claim the rock, as it lies within the UK's EEZ. No country disputes the UK claim. This error is repeated over and over on Wikipedia. Claiming a rock within your own EEZ is perfectly enforcable in international law and there are surely thousands of rocks within EEZs claimed by their paretn countries. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.97.226.4 (talk) 13:04, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I notice the argument going to and fro at the relevant article. I will take a look at the latest but assertions of this kind without a suitable reference don't mean much I'm afraid. Ben MacDui 17:49, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
