Tayi Arajakate, do you think there are enough references to back up this list? Here I am also asking whether there are any online references which could help support some of the unreferenced content or improve the overall quality and accuracy of the referencing in this list. DTM (talk) 11:04, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

DiplomatTesterMan, if you are asking me if there are enough sources available in general then yes, I think the list can be supported quite easily and expanded further. I can see you have already included some of them. Among those that are freely accessible, the media ownership monitor by RwB is quite useful and can alone support most of it. Though note, their dataset isn't that comprehensive in the number of outlets it covers. The Hoot is another one and articles from Reuters Institute are a good resource among freely accessible sources though you might have to dig a bit, the Digital News Report series is particularly useful. There are also a lot of academic sources especially for the older news media. Some of them should be accessible through Wikipedia Library, a lot can be found through JSTOR as well. By the way, I've added citations for the unsourced ones in the list now. Tayi Arajakate Talk 13:29, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Tayi Arajakate, I had noticed the media ownership monitor by Reporter without Borders, but they have marked their content as NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-ND 4.0). Isn't referencing the media monitor in this list an example of derivative work? DTM (talk) 03:17, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No, they don't have copyright over the information, only the presentation of their database/report. Tayi Arajakate Talk 11:34, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Tayi Arajakate, Newslaundry has a wonderful series of articles on ownership of news orgnisations in India— WHO OWNS YOUR MEDIA?: A Newslaundry series that deciphers the ownership of India's major news organisations:
With reference to your comment below as well, don't these citations support having an article on just news media/organisation. Yes, "Media in India" is an article, but there are a couple of articles focusing on just news as well— List of newspapers in India and List of news channels in India. Media ownership in India can still be created at some later stage and merged into it if this article doesn't work out? DTM (talk) 10:05, 25 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
DiplomatTesterMan, I suppose we can give a shot to an article on news media ownership though I'm afriad it'll have to venture into covering media ownership in general to some extent for many of the companies and corporations. The Newslaundry series is indeed quite good though notice that it ends up covering non-news media to some degree for pretty much all of them, for example while the article on "Zee empire" tries to focus on the news media aspect of the group, about half of it has to cover their media assets in general which is necessary to explain their financial issues, same applies to their article on Times Group although to a somewhat lesser extent. The Hindu Group is an exception among all of them primarily because its interests are solely in news media but this is hardly the norm.
By the way, my concern was more so about structuring this article as a list which I do not think can accurately represent ownership. It's not just a list of names like the articles on newspapers or news channel are, there are usually multiple owners with different shareholding, segregated ownership from the same party, multiple kinds of ownership which includes individuals, trusts, holding companies, operating companies, institutional owners, employee shareholding through stock options, general public holdings if the company is publicly traded, joint venture structures, etc. Most of it can't really be represented through a family name either, many families have dominant control over particular companies but the degree and manner of control varies a lot while much of the complications still exist just within the promoter group. Multiple image

[edit]

Would the multiple image template look better here or at Media of India#Ownership and funding? DTM (talk) 11:11, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Founder, owners, investor etc

[edit]

The article currently does not clarify the different terminology associated with it well enough — Founder, owners, investor etc DTM (talk) 11:17, 22 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This is my primary concern with a list article like this, ownership structures aren't always very clear cut so I don't think its even possible to accurately represent the variety of ownership structures that exist in a list. I'd suggest restructuring this article to be about "Media Ownership in India" which would be a notable topic on its own right, and would also act as a sub-article of Media in India. Restricting it to be about news media can also complicate things as there is significant overlap and the industry itself doesn't always clearly segregate news media from the rest, their coverage as a result has to follow a similar pattern.
