General Information

[edit]

This list of museums in the state was separated from List of museums in the United States on January 07, 2008. Please see List of museums in the United States for all history prior to that date.

Feel free to include Template:Infobox Museum when adding or editing articles on individual museums. Noroton (talk) 02:14, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Inclusion criteria

[edit]

In February 2008 at Talk:List of museums in the United States, a consensus was reached on this statement on what kind of institutions to include on state museum-list articles:

Historic houses or halls of fame may be listed if they function as or include public museums -- see Biltmore Estate, Plumb House, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Baseball Hall of Fame for examples. Art galleries that function primarily to sell art should not be listed, but public art museums that use "gallery" as part of their name may be listed. Nature centers and botanical gardens may be listed only if they contain historical or educational exhibits in a museum format.

Also inappropriate for this list are planetariums, aquaria and zoos, which have their own lists. Please follow these criteria when considering additional items for this list, or suggest changes at Talk:List of museums in the United States. Keep in mind there are lists for institutions similar to museums, as noted in the See also section of this article. Noroton (talk) 02:14, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Suggested county column

[edit]

Hey there, it seems that I have missed the general discussion on the re-design of the list. Dang! I think it's a great idea to have this list and it will be very useful to readers. I have added two, three items to the list already. What I noticed when I first saw the list is that some locations were unknown to me and it was difficult to figure out at first glance where in TN they are.

Would it make sense to add a column that shows in which county the place is located? With the sortable table you could not only group the items by city but also by county. To me that would make a whole lot of sense as counties are generally accepted political divisions, anyway. Actually, the List of museums in Alabama uses that very approach. At least it looks like that at first. As a matter of fact, they use a "County" column but the items in that column seem to be regions of the state.

I know, all that should have been mentioned in the discussion but I have missed that. As I read in the discussion it is permissible to apply changes to the list design when they make sense in certain cases. In case that a consensus can be found that adding a county column makes sense and is an improvement to the list I'd volunteer to do the work.

Fort Donelson in the image category

[edit]

Why is the Frist's image duplicated in the Ft. Donelson row? Bms4880 (talk) 20:23, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like a copy/paste error to me, no big deal, I guess. I removed the wrong image and inserted the right one. doxTxob \ talk 22:10, 29 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Images moved to commons

[edit]

Hey, I have moved all images relating to museums that I could find on en.wiki to commons if they were of an appropriate copyright status. At en.wiki they are all tagged with the {{now commons}} tag and prone to deletion on the local wiki. This goes especially to Bms4880, as you contributed quite a lot of museum related images. Great photos, I enjoyed them! I hope I categorized them all well and did not miss any.

The TN museum related images are all in the commons commons:Category:Museums in Tennessee. There, they are organized by county with city categories if there are at least two images for that city. In cases where at least two images were available for a museum, I created a category for that museum and added the {{Commons cat}} tag to the respective article and the {{commonscat-inline|bullet=none|Name of museum category}} tag in the notes section of this list. I think that is a good encouragement for contributors to add their free images to commons right away.

All images in the list with appropriate copyright status should be in the commons category as of today.

Take care! doxTxob \ talk 22:26, 29 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have marked all images that are processed in the right category at commons with this comment <!--CatCommonsDone--> right after the image link. This way it is easy to figure out which images from this list are missing at commons. I hope that everyone can agree with this. doxTxob \ talk 00:03, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
