Talk:List of municipalities in the Czech Republic: A – I
Appearance
Obec & village
[edit]It is definitely wrong to translate "obec" with "village", the text should say "municipality". Juro 22:18, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, but here it translates "vesnice" and not "obec" - which is correct. As far as I know, municipality (="obec") means all "vesnice" (village) + "město" (town) + "statutární město" (city). We are trying to distinguish it here in the list. --Ioannes Pragensis 16:07, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
- I can hardly believe that this is a list of "vesnice"s...Juro 19:06, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
- Some villages (vesnice) are parts of cities (Sedlec-Prčice is "město" but contain two towns and 34 small villages as municipal parts), some villages are parts of big municipalities which contain several (up to tens) of villages, some villages constitute a small one-village municipality. Municipalities which are neither "město" nor "městys" are sometimes called "vesnice" but that is incorrect and confusing. Municipalities which are neither "město" nor "městys" are called simply "obec" (municipality).
- Cities and towns are also municipalities but use the word "město" or "městys" instead of "obec". (There exists also differentiation by administrative level - the first grade is simply obec, the second grade is "pověřená obec" ("obec s pověřeným obecním úřadem"), the third grade is "obec s rozšířenou působností". Most of the second-grade municipalites and nearly all third-grade municipalities are cities (but many of smaller cities are of the first grade). The biggest 26 cities (cca over 40.000 inhab.) are titled "statutární město".
- Besides that, some cities are seat of the district ("okresní město", now only formal) or seat of the region ("krajské město", in both systems of regions). Prague as "hlavní město" (capital city) have a special status. ŠJů (talk) 17:26, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
District names
[edit]Czech district names are derived from the name of the "district city" but they are normally used with both parts together: "okres Domažlice" cannot be called only "Domažlice", "Domažlice" is not the name of the district but only the name of the city. Such shortening is possible only exceptionally, e. g. in tables with a heading (more commons is to abbreviate them to a code such DO or PH, see here). --ŠJů (talk) 17:44, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
