[edit]The purpose of this list was established at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Roads_in_Maryland#Minor_Routes, and a unanimous consensus for its creation was reached. Its purpose is to list the routes that do not have enough information on them to write an entire article on.-Jeff (talk) 04:14, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
- Perhaps a better intro is needed explaing what a minor stste road would be for the purpose of the list? --Boothy443 | trácht ar 04:31, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
- I fixed the intro up a bit so now it explains what is meant by "minor route" perhaps a better title is needed, but I can't think of anything.-Jeff (talk) 04:52, 1 April 2006 (UTC)
How detailed do we want this list to be? If you see my pending edits, I'm looking to add all current of 8xx and 9xx state roads in PG County. I may include 7xx, as well. My intentions are to do the same for Montgomery County. I will likely start adding these in on Wednesday or Thursday if no one objects. Note that these streets are *very* minor, in most cases being only a couple dozen feet long, being without any signs indicating state maintenance, and could very well be mistaken for someone's driveway. Oftentimes even the SHA staff do not realise that the roads are property of SHA, unless the MAARS Location Reference Guide is consulted. --Thisisbossi 02:15, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
- A few sentances on each will do, just a brief description on where it is would be good. The whole purpose of this list is to cover routes that are so minor that there isn't much to say about them, so if there isn't much to say about a route, say it here, if there's alot to say about it, create an article and say it there. It's probable that in the future, articles may even be split from here if one of the routes listed here is found to be particularly notable.-Jeff (talk) 00:21, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
- Shall do. I'll try and remember to bring a MAARS home with me for the weekend and will add a plethora of minor highways -- just the lengths and names (or locations if I happen to know where they are). Get ready with those shields! --Thisisbossi 01:37, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
I'd recommend covering old alignments not here but in the articles about the current routes. --SPUI (T - C) 01:49, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
- One long night later, I have added every single state roadway in PG County above MD 501 as per the 2004 MAARS Locator Manual. That is as current as I have access to, since I don't want to deprive our office of our only 2005 manual. I am done with this article, so feel free to proofread or modify as you wish. It is getting quite a bit lengthy, especially considering that this is just half of one county. We may need to consider another format for these minor roadways; or perhaps some control over what is even worth being considered "minor". I will add the appropriate "Maryland Route xxx" redirects as well as add these in on the main list tonight, so don't worry about doing that. Lastly, thanks to Jeff for providing me with all those shield templates! --Thisisbossi 04:53, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
- Maybe later as the list grows we can merge some of the older alignments with the routes they were formed from like SPUI said, that should reduce the size somewhat. For now though, I think we can leave it as is.-Jeff (talk) 00:57, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Splitting grouped letter-suffixed routes
[edit]I was thinking that it would be a good idea to move the letter-suffixed routes from here to the articles on their parent routes. Even if there is no "parent" route for certain letter-suffixed routes (such as the 810s) we could still create an article to group them under (Maryland Route 810) and put them there. A couple of articles where this is already done are Maryland Route 648 and Maryland Route 835.-Jeff (talk) 03:04, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me! --Thisisbossi 10:02, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- Just another thought. I am sitting here at work and realised that we do not have a good method of locating which of these tiny street segments are indeed ours. I came here, pressed CTRL-F, typed in the street name, and voila it came up as one of those 810x roads. I support throwing all the information into a separate MD 810 article, but I would like to keep a mention on this page of what minor highways are included under that. For example, I'll have one MD 810 heading; but in the text I will mention the streetnames of 810A, B, C, etc. for easy searching capability (CTRL-F'ing?). My goal for this weekend is to get some more minor PG roads up, possibly shift these really minor letter roads into a single article, and also start putting in redirects for MD xxx to the main articles. --Thisisbossi 13:23, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- I took the liberty of splitting MD 564 already, since the main route is over 6 miles I figured this didn't really qualify as a minor route.-Jeff (talk) 04:34, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
MD 911?
[edit]Should I add something about MD 911 in Rockville, MoCo to this list. It connects Veirs Mill Road (MD 586 and MD 28) and the northern part of First Street(MD 28, also) with Rockville Pike (MD 355). At this point, First Street (MD 911) turns into Wootton Parkway, which has no designation. --RockRNC 01:13, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
- Go for it -- I someday hope to add all of the PG and MoCo highways, but it is a task that I have been procrastinating on for about a year now :) Actually, I could swear MD 911 is signed in a couple spots ... though I may just be imagining that. --Bossi (talk • gallery • contrib) 05:52, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
Measuring MD 715 w/ a micrometer
[edit]User:Dough4872 changed the approximate length of MD 715 from 1.2 mi to 1.19 mi. I reverted that change because the difference amounts to less than 53 feet. At the moderate speed of 45 mi/h, that works out to the distance driven in eight tenths of a second! Such precision is inappropriate, especially in a statistic labeled as approximate. Minor Highway Plan
[edit]The definition of a "minor highway" is either undefined, ambiguous, or arbitrary. The best way to eliminate having to figure out what a minor highway is for purpose of having it on a list of minor highways is to eliminate the list altogether. However, there is a lot of valuable information in the list that needs to be saved. Most of that information can be put to good use either by expanding the data into new, well-developed articles or moving the information to articles about related highways. The goal of this initiative is to eventually retire the list while transferring all relevant data to other articles. To accomplish this, over time we will transfer every route on the list either (1) to the article of a related route, or (2) to its own developed article.
- Many routes in the Maryland highway system are related to each other by history. For instance, MD 144 is related to US 40 because the former route (the child) is the old alignment of the latter route (the parent). Similarly, MD 765 is a child route of MD 2 because MD 765 is a collection of MD 2's old alignments in southern Calvert County. The vast majority of the highways in the minor routes list are related in some way to highways with their own articles. The information on the "minor" highway can be transferred to the article of the relevant "major" highway. For example, MD 430, a highway in the minor routes list, is related to MD 193, which has its own article, by MD 193 having taken over much of MD 430's length. Therefore, to provide better context than including MD 430 in a list of minor routes, we should integrate MD 430 into the MD 193 article as a related route. Course of Action: Incorporate all minor routes that are related to a route with its own article into that article in a Related routes section. For examples of how this has been done, see Maryland Route 53 and U.S. Route 220 in Maryland. MD 636 was moved from the minor routes list to MD 53. MD 807 was moved from the minor routes list to US 220 in Maryland. I will put together a list of highways presently in the minor routes list that should be incorporated in this manner.
- There are other highways in the minor routes list that are not related to another highway, be it a child or parent. These articles should be split out into their own articles. However, instead of just transferring the information and being done with it, these articles should be sectioned properly with at minimum a lead, route description, and junction list. These articles should also have a history section and be properly referenced, although sometimes that is not possible right away. The last thing we want to do is add more stubs. Course of Action: Split out all minor routes that are deserving of their own article. Make sure the new articles have all required fields, such as a route description and junction list. If you do not think you can expand a minor highway into an article that will not be a stub, then ask for help or leave the highway for someone who will fashion a proper article for the highway. For examples of how this has been done, see Maryland Route 57 and Maryland Route 736. Both highways were expanded into proper articles after being listed in the minor routes list. I will put together a list of highways presently in the minor routes list that should be expanded in this manner.
If you have any questions or comments, please offer them here. In the next week, I will provide a list of minor highways that we should target for either folding into other articles or splitting out into new articles. Viridiscalculus (talk) 04:15, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Minor Routes List Update
[edit]An update three months after the push to work on the minor routes list began. The original plan was to expand more significant routes into their own articles and to place minor routes into the articles of their "parent." In May, consensus shifted away from placing related routes in their parent articles. The related routes scheme was less arbitrary than placing such highways in a minor routes list, but it was still arbitrary. A more objective approach was suggested to group all routes shorter than one mile together. That approach was adopted in the form of the List of state highways in Maryland shorter than one mile.
After that infrastructure was settled upon, the next step was to create articles for those routes in the minor routes list that were not shorter than one mile. Once all of those routes were removed, the remaining routes could then be transferred to the new list of highways shorter than one mile with minimal required revision. As of today, the final route longer than one mile was removed from the minor routes list. Therefore, the remaining routes in the minor routes list can now be transferred gradually to the new objective list. Once all routes have been transferred from the minor routes list, all references and links to the minor routes list will be changed to point to the new list and the minor routes list will be marked for deletion.
