Starred
[edit]There are a couple of schools in the list, for example Minehead Middle School, which have a star next to their name but I cannot find an explanation of the star...-Localzuk(talk) 15:32, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
- I compiled the list and I think at the time those two schools were under threat of closure. That appears not to have happened. I have removed the asterisks. Tafkam 17:44, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
- That is a distinct possibility - there had been some discussion of changing from 3 tier to 2 tier in the area, and also MMS in particular was under special measures a few years ago.-Localzuk(talk) 17:54, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
Former middle schools
[edit]Would a list of former middle schools (ie ones in areas where the system has been discontinued) be appropriate at all anywhere on Wikipedia? And if so would it be suitable for this article or a new separate article? Sir Stanley) 19:43, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
- It would be a very-difficult-to-source list - and a very long one. Perhaps a list of authorities which formerly had middle schools might be suitable. Even that would be quite lengthy, but more manageable. With over 2000 schools in the eighties, and probably over 3000 in total it would otherwise become quite an unmanageable list! I might see what I can find by way of sources for authorities which used to have them. Tafkam (talk) 20:36, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
Middle Schools in all but name
[edit]Could somebody who knows a thing or two about this subject explain why in areas that discontinued middle schools, the school systems are still operating in three tiers. Indeed my former school is now named as a primary, but is only for the Plowden age range 7-11 just as it was in the 1970s. This school is fed from younger age primaries and feeds into a secondary from age 12 (post-september). So it would seem to me that in some areas the discontinuation of middle schools is just a reclassification exercise, two primaries and a secondary, no functional difference from the Plowden system. --81.144.195.100 (talk) 13:40, 7 December 2017 (UTC)
- The 7-11 age range is the traditional junior range. Plowden recommended 8-12 Middle Schools (i.e. current school years 4 to 7). Many areas reverted to a three-school system along traditional infant, junior and secondary lines. The rationale is usually that those ages align with the statutory Key Stages of the National Curriculum. MichaelT1979 (talk) 15:14, 9 December 2017 (UTC)
