"Highway"

Confusion? Surely any road or street bearing one of those blue shields must be some sort of highway? If not, the page needs a clear link to the definition of "highway" that excludes the "major road" group. Robin Patterson (talk) 13:04, 25 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a little confused as to what you mean. The blue shields can appear on even fairly minor roads - Route 64, although a fairly major route in the western suburbs, takes in all sorts of fairly minor roads which wouldn't even be notable enough for an article on Wikipedia. Perth in that sense is not terribly different to its east coast counterparts. There's no clear definition of highway, in the sense that roads named "highway" can be anything from metropolitan shopping strips to freeways (e.g. large sections of Reid, Tonkin and Roe) and everything in between, whilst roads not named "highway" such as Ennis Avenue, Wanneroo Road, Stock Road and Rockingham Road would clearly meet any objective categories for one. Mind you, it's not as confusing as Auckland, where a link road or even in one case a residential street can be called "highway". :) Orderinchaos 01:50, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What is the criteria for inclusion here?

I have removed Lake Road from this list, it is hardly a major road, and lost its few hundred metres of state route at least 5 years ago.

It got me wondering, what is the criteria is for inclusion on this list? Does it have to be managed by MRWA (it will have a H or M designation on RIMS)? If so, many of these roads listed would be out, including several state routes. Does it need to have a route number (excluding tourist drives) or be managed by MRWA? If so, several of these are out, such as Farrington Rd, Malaga Dr, Crimea St, Vahland Ave, Karel Ave, Bannister road (the Canning Vale one, not the MRWA managed one in the wheatbelt) and even Drumpellier Dr, actually (mostly) built by MRWA.

This list needs some properly defined criteria for inclusion, maybe something like traffic counts can factor in, and (controversially?) I suggest that state routes should not be automatically included.

My first suggestion for criteria is this:

1. Average annual daily traffic count above [TBD] vehicles per day at (at least) one point on the road (as found on RIMS data). If this point represents an intersection, then it must only include traffic actually on the road in question, I.e. not through traffic on the intersecting road.
or
2. Managed by mainroads WA, if so, it will have a H or M designation on RIMS.
or
3. Significant enough to warrant inclusion, (meeting this criteria will require consensus on the talk page)

An alternative method would again use RIMS data, but would use their named designations, such as "Secondary distributor" or "Local road" and would include anything in a certain category or higher. This is probably simpler, but does have some issues.
