Talk:List of longest placenames in Ireland
This article is rated List-class on Wikipedia's content assessment scale. It is of interest to the following WikiProjects: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Logainm
[edit]Pace logainm.ie, most of the 35 minor features it says are in the townland of Waterdale are not visible on the OSI 25-inch map; they are in the OSI map of Oghil for which logainm lists only one minor feature. jnestorius(talk) 20:17, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
Rival placenames
[edit]I suggest we move the table to Place names in Ireland and create a new section for it there. We can then add a link to it on the Muckanaghederdauhaulia article. ~Asarlaí 20:19, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
- I thought about doing that; but I think better to move this article to List of longest placenames in Ireland. Muckanaghederdauhaulia is a mere townland; apart from its dubious claim to the record it's non-notable (even a mention by Perec won't qualify it). jnestorius(talk) 20:26, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not sure. Firstly, Muckanaghederdauhaulia might be notable purely because it's commonly believed to be Ireland's longest placename (even though it's not). Secondly, I think a stand-alone List of longest placenames in Ireland is likely to be proposed for deletion.
- Perhaps we should put it before WP:IE? ~Asarlaí 20:49, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, why not. jnestorius(talk) 21:08, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
- Actually, I think moving this to List of longest placenames in Ireland (and having Muckanaghederdauhaulia as a redirect) would be the best option after all. It has more potential as a stand-alone article than I first thought. The list has grown to a decent length, and we could lengthen it by adding placenames with 20 and 21 letters. ~Asarlaí 23:13, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, why not. jnestorius(talk) 21:08, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
Shortest placename
[edit]The joke is that "Inch" is the shortest placename in Ireland; meaning not Inch, County Clare or Inch, County Wexford but inch. Has anyone citable come up with a real candidate? Ox Mountains is arguably two letters, as are Bo Hill, Bo Island, Go Island. The Vee might be spelt V. For settlements my money is on Emo, County Laois and Nad, County Cork. jnestorius(talk) 18:55, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
- I don't know about Ireland, but probably the shortest place name in Scottish Gaelic is Ì. +Angr 13:39, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
- Two names that are each arguably one letter are Wood of O, County Offaly and The V, County Waterford. Every "Iona Road" is "Bóthar Í", but I don't know how many Americans consider "H Street" to be a short name. jnestorius(talk) 09:55, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
Longest Irish word in a placename
[edit]Among townlands in logainm.ie, the longest Irish word seems to be in An Fhionnchoillteach (17 letters; Finkiltagh, Co. Antrim). jnestorius(talk) 20:52, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
- Ionad na Dea-Chomhairleoireachta (19 letters, excluding prefix; "Good Counselling Centre", Dublin) jnestorius(talk) 12:55, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
Drehideenglashanatooha
[edit]The following unsourced entry appears at list of long place names. JJB 17:49, 27 November 2012 (UTC)
- Full name: Drehideenglashanatooha (22 letters)[citation needed]
- Location: a bridge in County Tipperary, Ireland
- Language: Anglicisation of Irish Droichidín Glaise na Tuaithe
- Translation: Little bridge of stream of the túath
- Notes:
- Thanks, I've added with a reference, though not the Irish name, which the Placenames Database of Ireland is uncertain of. jnestorius(talk) 13:43, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
John O' Donovan notebooks
[edit]Galway Public Library's Placenames of Galway includes scans of John O'Donovan's field notebooks from the Ordnance Survey. He was the most important person in recommending anglicized spellings of Gaelic topnyms. I've processed the (incomplete) parish lists and found the following 20-letter candidates. Donovan's directions allowed me to find two on the OS first-edition map; one is eligible, the other not.

Multi-Word names
[edit]It would be nice to see a list on this page of the longest placenames which consist of multiple words (such as Stratford-on-Slaney). Or does a separate page exist? Ridiculopathy (talk) 17:19, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
