How this article was written
[edit]Hi, To write this article, I looked individually at every country listed there, and found relevant sources, some of them were not already in the "lists of Caves" Liste of Longest caves" or "caves by country" articles.
At this date, jan 2023, this list is perfectly accurate.
I'm a speleologist from france with knowledge in that matter Ospeleo (talk) 07:05, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
What references should there be in this article
[edit]To make this list, it is advised not only look at Bob's list. There is no point in just copying it to put it there. (there are some errors in this list, and since it is not updated now (2023), Appropriate primary (or rarely secondary) source should be found. Ospeleo (talk) 09:31, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
- For example, at the moment (feb 2023), Bob lists Apocalypse pothole, 14km, as the longest in South Africa. The reference Given is Eric Madelaine's list. However, according to Eric's list, Apocalypse pothole is 12.3km
- Primary source should be found. Ospeleo (talk) 09:37, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
Nepal
[edit]I had some problems for Nepal
Madelaine writes: Pathale Chhango 2960m, citing IntCav #13 I don't have access to Int'l caver #13 to check their source
A lot of secondary sources write 2950-2960-2983m for the cave length, rarely citing their reference. When they do, it's Gebauer 1983
Gebauer published in 1986 the cave survey of Patalae Chhango, 2056.7m. The survey date is 15/02/1980. I assume that he published in. 1986 the most recent length at this date. I cannot find any other expedition/survey after that. [1]https://digitalcommons.usf.edu/ijs/vol15/iss1/4/
It is sure that the copy of the article, from 1986, might have been a little unclear, the ink smudged and it is possible to read "2956" instead of "2056" (as in the available pdf above)
The cave coordinates are from Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave, and in concordance with Google Maps Ospeleo (talk) 08:53, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
- I forgot.
- Gebaueur writes the cave is Patalae Chhango, (Devi's Fall), in Pokhara
- Wikipedia page Davis Falls say there is a long cave there, Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave
- The official webpage of the cave says it's 2950m long.
- Gabaeur cave map shows the waterfall, so We can safely assume it is the same cave, and use the local name Ospeleo (talk) 08:58, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
Zimbabwe
[edit]hi @Biboc,
For Zimbabwe, i couldn't find a reliable source outside of Bob Gulden, that's why I didn't want to mention Badze Caves.
It would be better that this list rely on primary sources, from expedition reports or scientific papers, in my opinion, and not only "copy" Bob Gulden's list without references
