Why?
[edit]why do people create lists that must be updated, and then dont update or create a structure that still holds if not updated? for this list to work, it needs to have a NEW set of top pubs every year added, with the previous top ones still listed. if it just changes every year, its not an encyclopedia article. i will change the structure, but if noone is watching this, it may have to be deleted. ok, my idea of fixing. i am not going to translate the sales figures for 2008 (this was a link already provided). hopefully someone will adopt this article.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 16:12, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
- Storm in a teacup. I created the page, and still watch it. The ordering changed very little from 2007 to 2008 -- Bloomsbury were down from 2007 because there wasn't a Harry Potter novel, John Wiley pushed out Simon & Schuster from the bottom of the top 10.
- The encyclopedic value of the list is (i) to correlate the most popular imprints as marketed with the conglomerates that own them; (ii) to give a rough idea of the pecking order of those conglomerates in terms of scale (and therefore power).
- Per those considerations, the difference between 2007 and 2008 is not much more than statistical noise. Jheald (talk) 19:16, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
- sorry if i sounded unreasonable. i should have been less partisan. reasons for this being an article are well taken. i agree that this is notable and worthy of an article. my concern is that once its started, it be continued. if the results are nearly identical, that should be in the article, requiring a summarizing of the external reference. I also think that prior years should be listed if articles were written for those years. i dont think that providing a link to the next years analysis is enough. I may actually do that summation at some point. anyway, im not gonna mess with this article, just wanted to make my points. thanks for creating it. ill make constructive changes if i can.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 02:21, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- Data for 2005 and 2006 here. Perhaps best to update first section to latest full year (ie 2008), then a section with a sortable table for sales and rankings in previous years, if you think that would help show recent trends. Jheald (talk) 07:44, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- This should again be updated if anyone is monitoring this page. The top ten for 2018 are: PRH, Hachette, HarperCollins, Pan Macmillan, Bloomsbury, Oxford University Press, Bonnier, Simon & Schuster, Usborne, Scholastic. The top four are listed here and there is also this and this but unfortunately a couple are still left out and I am not sure if information about those are readily available anywhere to be cited--I received this list from my colleague.
