Jazz doesn't step forward in decades
[edit]Pinning styles to decades like tails on a donkey is not a method of writing history. Mark this progress with specific artists' contributions (which do not occur neatly in 1930, 1940, etc.) — let's more than just their names next to meaningless stylistic categories. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.131.132.174 (talk) 07:28, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

[edit]Lakis Diakogiannis is not appropriate for the list of jazz saxophonists as there is no corresponding article in Wikpedia. As a result of this, his name has been removed until such time he is considered noteworthy enough for someone to create such an article.Paul210 (talk) 17:30, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit]I see Frank Basile has been added to the list.Perhaps someone can create a Wikipedia article on him to confirm his notability. Paul210 (talk) 22:30, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
Red link policy
[edit]I have some concerns about the inclusion of this policy: "Please don't add links to musicians for whom there is no article on Wikipedia; they will be removed. There are a lot of gaps in Wikipedia's coverage of jazz, but either place a request for the article in question or create one yourself." While I appriciate the need for maintaining an accurate list, I think attempts to prevent the inclusion of red linked articles on this list is counterintuitive to both the wikipedia editing philosophy and the usefulness of the list. I personally think that this policy is entirely counter to the third and fifth pillars at Wikipedia:Five pillars. Its also seems to be an attempt at asserting ownership of this article by certain individuals. The fact that I could not add a notable musician to this list simply because he didn't have an article seems ridiculous. This is supposed to be a collaborative encyclopedia with the intent of providing a broad, thorough, and accurate coverage of topics. I don't see how adding red links to notable saxophonists can in any way be detrimental to this list. On the contrary, it adds to the list's value in terms of comprehensiveness and it may in fact encourage more people to create articles on notable saxophonists. (Which in this case it eventually did; see Ben Smith (musician)) This is the only list I have ever come across on wikipedia with a no red link policy and to me it seems like that policy inhibits or even discourages content growth. Further, the list is currently so willy nilly in terms of coverage due to lack of red links that the list itself seems to be pointless. With obvious biographical gaps on this list its value is significantly diminished. I personally feel that this policy should be removed immidiately. There doesn't seem to have been any discussion here about the inclusion of such a guideline, so I am assuming that a single editor implemented it of his own accord (perhaps User:Paul210?) - As a confirmed redlinker (you'd be amazed at the number of really notable people out there who don't yet have an article at Wikipedia), in broad terms I agree with Singingdaisies. While it's not the first list I've come across that doesn't "allow" redlinks, my own experience tells me that a redlink on a page [of a notable musician] requires following up, and as Singingdaisies points out, many articles have resulted.
- As far as the consensus goes, that's great. But what happens if the consensus says no to redlinks?
- On the other hand, as lists are far more indiscriminate, I can see that there's virtually no limit to the nonsense that can appear if there ain't some sort of limitation (Bill Clinton is a jazz saxophonist?). I'd imagine that many newcomers add things before they've read about Wikipedia notability, so maybe instead of deleting the redlink (unless it's patent nonsense, but that goes without saying...), a message could be left on the newcomer's talk page inviting them to follow it up (with link to guidelines), if more experienced editors don't take it upon themselves to start the corresponding article.
- Or rather than "prohibiting" redlinks outright, maybe we could leave a note suggesting that editors stick any redlinks on the talk page instead of on the article page and they can be taken up from there.--Technopat (talk) 07:59, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
An excellent idea, Technopat. Paul210 (talk) 10:32, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
- I agree that some sort of standard should be put in place to avoid bad entries onto the list. I would be up for requiring references for each individual name and using that as a standard for inclusion. That would be a requirement for blue linked articles as well. I know that is a lot of work (which I am willing to help with) but it would ultimately improve the list's quality. As for avoiding additions of people like Bill Clinton, I think the lead should be tweaked to clarify that entries must be professional saxophonists. That would get rid of people who dabble in the art.Singingdaisies (talk) 21:32, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Tom Tallitsch has been added to this list and, while he has a wiki article, the article has a notability tag and the article has all the signs of a vanity piece having been created by a user called Tomtallitsch. Whatever,he certainly does not belong on this list with these distinguished musicians. I propose that his name is removed. Paul210 (talk) 22:20, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit]I deleted Mindi Abair, She is not a Jazz saxophonist. She is a commercial Pop, rock, smooth jazz, R&B sax player. This list needs to be only for real Jazz saxophonists. What is real jazz you ask? Does it swing? If it swings then it's Jazz, if it doesn't swing then it's something else like fusion, punk, screamo, surf rock, or what ever. What about Latin Jazz, we need a category for Latin jazz. This list is useless because so many people are left off because they don't have an article on Wikipedia. How come I'm not on the frickin' list? Wikipedia is not GOD so stop trying to pretend you're the world cyber police. Everytime I add some of my friends, who are valid Jazz saxophonists,(I've been playing for 45 years, you come along and delete them. Well, I'm going to clean house now. Thank you for your time. I don't even know who you are, but a nameless faceless editor. Spam Jackson, Detroit Professional Jazz Tenor Saxophonist 30JUN2011
- I certain someone would be happy create an article for you if you meet the notability guidelines here: WP:NMUSIC. BTW, there is plenty of Jazz out there that doesn't swing. --| Uncle Milty | talk | 21:21, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

Wynton Marsalis
[edit]Does Wynton Marsalis not meet the notability criteria? Or is there no WP article on him? I would be bold and add him if I knew how. Can someone more proficient than myself please see to this? Cheers, (201.224.33.254 (talk) 18:27, 4 September 2012 (UTC))
- Branford Marsalis is the saxophonist in the family, not Wynton.--| Uncle Milty | talk | 01:19, 5 September 2012 (UTC)
