Boldface players
[edit]I see that these are generally more "renowned" players, but why exactly are these specific players' names emboldened? 174.75.74.150 (talk) 15:37, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Slavas
[edit]I edited out all the Slavas (short form of Vyacheslav in Russian), plus a couple of others. Otherwise, one should accept that Theoren Fleury's nickname is "Theo", Robert Gordon Orr's nickname is "Bobby" and so on. Mrbluesky 01:08, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
About the proposal to merge this page
[edit]I don't know how this works, but it looks like the discussion on List of sportspeople by nickname thought it was a good idea to break out each sport into its own list. It looks to me like the consensus is to NOT MERGE the pages. If anyone knows how to remove the tag, (or are we allowed to just do that ourselves?), well, I vote to remove the tag. It's easier to find useful info with separate lists. ColtsScore 05:06, 31 May 2006 (UTC) I'm removing the merge proposal tag, as per consensus at Talk:List of sportspeople by nickname ColtsScore 12:49, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
Teams
[edit]This section needs to be cleaned up: the list of nicknames should rolled up into the table (alphabetical by team name) and citations added. -- BroMonque (talk) 18:39, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
I moved the Teams into the Table, kept the explanations (if any) but added no new citations. -- Leech44 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Leech44 (talk • contribs) 19:24, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Unsourced nicknames
[edit]I added some references to support the inclusion for a few of the unsourced nicknames in this list, but I deleted many more nicknames that were unsourced. The removal of unsourced nicknames was done per the policy of WP:BLP which says "Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced — whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable — should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion." Accordingly, do not add or re-add any unsourced nicknames or they will be deleted. Johnblue52 (talk) 20:54, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
- Why do you think the stuff you removed is contentious?--96.54.245.196 (talk) 20:57, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
- Unreferenced nicknames are questionable, and according to the policy Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons, those nicknames that do not have sources should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion. Do not restore the removed content unless you also list reference a source to verify the nickname. Johnblue52 (talk) 21:44, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
- No, only contentious material should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion. If you believe any of the nicknames are contentious, please explain.--SaskatchewanSenator (talk) 21:47, 18 February 2011 (UTC)
- Read WP:BLP: Any material challenged must be attributed to a reliable, published source using an inline citation. Now that I have challenged those unreferenced nicknames they should not be restored unless properly sourced. Johnblue52 (talk) 22:00, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

Ray Emery | Razor | ||
Dominik Hasek | The Dominator | Done | |

Additions and Flags
[edit]I don't want to mess with the table, but there are some players to add, many of them with their nicknames mentioned in their articles.
Dennis Hull: Silver Jet
Sandis Ozolinsh: Ozo
Arturs Irbe: Archie, Michelin Man
Bill Goldthorpe: Goldie
Fred Taylor: Cyclone
Harry Holmes: Hap
Wojciech Wolski: Wojtek
As for the flags next to the players names, what is the criteria for them? Stan Mikita has the flag of Czechoslovakia next to his name despite having been born in the Slovak Republic and having only ever played for Canada. Ziggy Palffy has the Hungarian flag next to his name even though he's a Slovak citizen, born in Czechoslovakia, having only represented Slovakia and Czechoslovakia. Peter Bondra doesn't have the Soviet or Ukrainian flag by his name even though he was born there. Olaf Kolzig doesn't have the German flag even though he's a German citizen who played for Germany. Adam Brown has the Scottish flag by his name while Steve Thomas has the British.
I think the flags should only be used for the players' birth places and countries they represented. The British flag should be used for all Brits as should the Soviet flag for all soviets who represented the USSR. The Soviet and Czechoslovak flags should not be used for players born in a former constituent country if they did not represent those states. Canadiens born before 1965 should have whichever version of the red ensign was being used at the time of their birth rather than the maple leaf. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.69.173.239 (talk) 00:36, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Re-adding 'team' section
[edit]I propose that a "Current Team" column be added after the "Nationality" column and be updated with the team players currently in the league play for. People could then sort by team to easily see the nicknames of all the players currently on that team. It sounds like there used to be some sort of team listing several years ago, but it was removed? If we just list the current team of current players, I think it will be much easier to maintain and use.

Coaches
[edit]What about listing former players known to have gotten nicknames when they became coaches? Two that come to mind are Bruce Boudreau ("Gabby") and Paul MacLean ("Mac", "Grizz").

Line/Multiple Player Nicknames
[edit]Should we create a new section for nicknames that include more than one person (but not a whole team), list these nicknames under individuals with some kind of notation ex: Nickname (with Other Player), or not include this type of nickname at all?
Examples of this type of nickname include the Dallas Stars' 'Finnish Mafia', Max Domi and Anthony Duclair as the 'Killer D's', and Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin as 'the two-headed monster". Mattdoug77 (talk) 01:07, 11 November 2022 (UTC)
Large, mostly unreferenced section
[edit]Pinging @Uncleben85, since he reverted my removal of the teams/arenas/former teams section.
This section is utterly embarassing WP:FANCRUFT. I can't count how many of our guidelines these sections violate. Notably, WP:V, as almost none of this is referenced, and WP:HOAX, as a good many of the nicknames here seem entirely made up or are obscure neologisms which may be found on one blog or another, and even, in some cases, potential violations of WP:SOAPBOX.
A couple of examples, using exact Google search terms:
- Anaheim Duck/Webbed-toes get no verifiable hits
- Arizona Coyotes/Biz's Wagons gets nothing outside Wikipedia mirrors
- Ditto for Buffalo Sabres/The True Wagon
- Chicago Blackhawks/Blackbirds - the Blackbirds seem to be a junior hockey team in the midwest; no evidence that anyone has ever called the NHL team that
- Edmonton Oilers/Oily Boys - Oily Boys seems to be a podcast, not a verifiable nickname for the team
- Additionally, none of the LA Kings nicknames shown here, including The Crown, Monarchs, Rink Royalty (which is the name of a blog), or Royalty can be attested to in anything resembling reliable sources as actual nicknames for the team.
- The list could very much go on
The Carolina Hurricanes as the 'Canes, the Montreal Canadiens as the Habs, the New York Rangers as the Blueshirts, and a few others are well attested, but there's so much junk here that one wonders if any of it is worth saving.
On to arenas:
- First Niagara/Effin Center - nothing but blogs
- The Rat Trap/Miami Arena - blogs and Reddit
- The Marina/Marine Midland Arena - nothing at all connecting the arena and "The Marina"
- The House That Rusty Built/Honda Center - a few social media posts
- The Stabe/UBS Center - absolutely nothing but Wikipedia mirrors
The arena section is a bit better, but pull other "nicknames", and you'll get similar results. Frankly, the team/arena section would violate WP:LISTN if it were on its own, and I question its place here anyways. Puck's in your court, @Uncleben85 - how would you fix this? schetm (talk) 22:01, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
- Additionally, any unreferenced or poorly referenced player nicknames violate WP:BLP and should be removed immediately. schetm (talk) 22:10, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
