AFAIK there are ghost towns that primarily exist for tourists, towns which are considered ghost towns but with a few people still living there, and "real" ghost towns (and possibly some other categories). Should we differentiate between them? D.D. 20:45 18 Jun 2003 (UTC)

How does Cripple Creek, Colorado qualify as a "Ghost Town" when it has a current population of 1,115? I thought the US Census didn't count ghosts. Wondering simply, -- Infrogmation 22:25 18 Jun 2003 (UTC)

How does the highly upscale ski resort of Aspen, Colorado qualify as a ghost town? RickK 06:02 12 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Deserted Villages

[edit]

The UK and French entries seem to be largely villages, Shouldn't these have their own section? Also, for the UK there is a large number of villages that were abandoned after the black death and in Scotland, many villages were destroyed during the highland clearances.--JBellis 18:54, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Also, the Finnish entry was never even a municipality. It was/is part of a city. Formerly Tammisaari, currently Raasepori. 85.76.2.142 (talk) 23:08, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ghost towns and Lost Cities

[edit]

I suggest that since they are both pretty much the same thing, that Ghost Towns and Lost cities should be merged together. The Lost Cities part could be the ancient lost cities.

New Orleans

[edit]

Even though New Orleans could lose a large number of residents by the 2010 Census, it has yet to become a ghost town. The city will rebuild, but far fewer people will be calling it home.

Namibia

[edit]

Why is the Namibian ghost town listed under "Africa" rather than under Namibia, like every other country? It's the only ghost town assigned to a continent rather than a country. If there is no convincing explanation, Imona change it.--Rockero 22:29, 17 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Is Chernobyl ghost town? It's settled. --Yonkie 21:09, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Define ghost town

[edit]

Echoing what someone said earlier, I think we need to have a clear definition of what a ghost town actually is. In my mind, it is a town with a population of 0 and still-extant buildings. I say this because I've been watching this page and I note that people keep adding "ghost towns" to this list that actually have a population.--Caliga10 13:57, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I see that people keep adding towns to this list that are not, in fact, completely abandoned. Would a better solution be to simply rename the article to 'List of ghost towns and mostly abandoned towns, or something similar. I suspect that this will keep happening and I think it's better to go with the flow than attempt to constantly clear these near-ghost towns out.--Caliga10 22:22, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Some are also islands, not towns, like St Kilda. Should it be ranamed List of settelments now mostly abandoned? Think outside the box 09:32, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I just removed the 5 alleged ghost towns near Antwerp from the list on the basis of them not meeting the definition, being a town where nobody lives. These were simply villages that had been demolished and new real estate were built on the spot, so they were never ghost towns. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Skrofler (talkcontribs) 17:15, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've tried, several times, to prompt a discussion on the definition of "ghost town", with little success. There is a trend to apply the term to all abandoned settlements, however and whenever they were founded and abandoned. I usually trot out examples such as Dunwich, Pompeii, etc. To me, and others, "ghost towns" are a specific and interesting subset of "former settlements" - which are grouped in a family of categories. Wrong Linking

[edit]

Found several links, just in the Australian section, that unnecessarily go to dab pages, or to the wrong page entirely. Ie. Pillinger linked to an asteroid called Pillinger rather than Pillinger, Tasmania, and Ophir, New South Wales. It should be Ophir, New South Wales one link not 2!. Many of the towns were (or are) like this. Silly! --220.101 (talk) \Contribs 18:20, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, Azerbaijan is in Asia, according to standard geographic convention. I've corrected the article – thanks for pointing out the mistake. DoctorKubla (talk) 21:40, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Christchurch

[edit]

Why is Christchurch listed? The city still has more than 300,000 residents. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 116.193.144.2 (talk) 22:13, 8 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, there are multiple sources describing Christchurch as a ghost town after the 2010/2011 earthquakes, such as the ChannelNewsAsia report cited in the article. I think settlements that were only temporarily abandoned deserve a mention in this list. I do have reservations, though, about whether Christchurch ever actually resembled a ghost town or whether that's just media exaggeration; that report says one-sixth of the population left, which doesn't seem such a dramatic exodus. DoctorKubla (talk) 06:02, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It was never abandoned however, the city centre was cordoned off and were accessable only to those who were working in the rescue operation and now the rebuilding operation, however the suburbs remained ocupied. Saying it resembles a ghosttown is not the same as saying that it is a ghost town. Plenty of cities resemble ghost towns around public hollidays, its a figure of speech rather than an actual statement. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 116.193.144.2 (talk) 03:40, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, I'll remove it. DoctorKubla (talk) 06:24, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

New Benghazi, Benghazi, Libya

[edit]
Can the New Benghazi site in Benghazi, Libya be mentioned as a ghost town; I'm not sure whether they'll revive the project ? See http://www.energy-daily.com/reports/Chinese_exodus_leaves_behind_Libya_ghost_town_999.html

The links of Romania's ghost towns are linked to the city what the ghost town belongs to. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.199.249.137 (talk) 11:18, 8 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
