Creation of set index article

[edit]

Per discussion with Classicfilms here, I've created a set index article to list together all the films that are named after him. If there are any suggestions or concerns, please let us know. Thanks, Erik II (talk | contrib) (ping me) 14:09, 15 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Have set index article or not?

[edit]

Steve Jobs (film) is currently a set index article that lists all films with the primary title "Steve Jobs" (as well as just "Jobs"). This set index article is linked in a hatnote at each film article, saying, "For other films named after Steve Jobs, see Steve Jobs (film)." I created the set index article because I think WP:SIMILAR applies here due to the similarity of these films' titles. This way we do not need to list all the films in one hatnote. However, the alternative is to not have the set index article and to instead revise the hatnote link to List of artistic depictions of Steve Jobs or List of artistic depictions of Steve Jobs#Films. While this eliminates redundancy of listing links, I think the primary goal of the set index article is to assist in navigation. Exploring other films of similar names is only incidental. I think linking to the list of artistic depictions moves away from assisting in navigation and to providing related topics (especially those not called "Steve Jobs"), which runs afoul of WP:RELATED in terms of hatnote use. I find the redundancy acceptable due to the narrow purpose of this set index article's scope. What do other editors think? Is the set index article appropriate, or is it redundant and better served by linking to the list of artistic depictions? Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 15:50, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it matters either way personally, but I would have redirected it to List_of_artistic_depictions_of_Steve_Jobs#Films since he is related to a lot of film media besides just films where he is the subject. Redirecting avoids assumptions about what readers might be searching for. For example, someone searching on the term could be just as easily looking for a list of films where he is depicted and they wouldn't find that at the set index. At the end of the day we are only talking about an extra click so it's not really a big deal. Betty Logan (talk) 19:57, 16 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: As the person who created the Steve Jobs List, I am fine with what ever decisions you make - including radically trimming it down. I actually like the film index because it is very specific - my concern (on another talk page) was with the Dab page, Steve Jobs (disambiguation) which seemed to repeat the same information. The problem really lies with two feature films that sound the same (Jobs 2013 and Steve Jobs 2015) and a 2015 documentary that has the phrase Steve Jobs in the title. There are others, but these are the three most likely to be confused. I am actually swamped in RL at the moment and can't be on the WP that much right now, but I will check in to see what happens and will help out when things begin to slow a bit. Steel1943, this set index article exists to list all films named after Steve Jobs. There are numerous films, and to avoid confusion, each film article links to the set index article in a hatnote. The article traffic statistics show that this set index article is much-used, so it is inappropriate to merely wipe out an article that is convenient for readers. • @Erik: I have no desire to discuss this, so I have dropped the stick. Wikipedia has more important matters that need editing than to edit war over this. Cheers! Steel1943 (talk) 15:43, 16 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth, see the link to my discussion to Classicfilms in creating this set index article. We discussed how to properly disambiguate the film articles (the 2015 film was previously under "Steve Jobs (film)"), and we created this as a way station of sorts to clear up confusion and show film topics of the same name to readers. I think the article traffic statistics, consistently over a thousand every day (occasionally spiking into multiple thousands) validates the use of this list. There is some redundancy, I agree, but redundancy is not forbidden if the other reasons for such an arrangement. Erik (talk | contrib) (ping me) 15:56, 16 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Move discussion in progress

[edit]

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Steve Jobs (2015 film) which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 13:47, 4 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
