Expanding
[edit]The List of films based on English-language comics meant other entries on the other main sorces of comic film inspiration were also possible: List of films based on French-language comics and List of films based on manga. This freed up this entry to act as an overivew to the whole area as well as allowing us to cover other areas currently too small to warrant their own entries like the other three. It is notable that there are quite a few entries required for the foreign language comics listed here and hopefully this entry might also help focus attention on resolving that issue. I'm sure there are plenty of other things to add here but I largely based this on the items dropped when "List of films based on comic books" was moved to "List of films based on American comic books" and so in a way this entry is the final product of the major clean up from the mess that move made restoring these foreign language films/comics to their rightful place (and addressing some problems of localisation and American/English bias) that crept in because of it. Jesuit Joe
[edit]Not sure where this one goes yet, what with all the new options and all ;) Jesuit Joe, I gather, is a French film[1], from an album by an Italian, though most likely first published in French. Anyone see a clear solution? MURGH disc. 17:03, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
- My thinking on this issue is that it is about the original language of the comic that is the specific bit for us here. So you could adapt a French comic into an English-language film. The mention would go in the French-language entry and may also appear somewhere under Enlgish-language film. For example The Story of Ricky is a Chinese film based on a Japanse manga (and Oldboy is South Korean based on another Japanese manga) so to avoid problems with "List of Japanese-language films based on Japanese-language manga" I have kept things loose. So bottom line: Its the original language (as they can, and have in that case, been translated and adapations can be in any language) which in this case is Italian. So you'll need to start a new section on this entry to slot it in. Hope that helps ;) (Emperor 17:12, 18 February 2007 (UTC))
- Yes, it makes sense, if only the publication history had been a little more clear. But no, even if this particular comic had a pre-run in French, it should be considered Italian, and if I was to claim otherwise I'd probably get some hard-line opposition. MURGH disc. 17:32, 18 February 2007 (UTC) Hey, didn't know Oldboy originally was Manga!
- In the end it can always be moved. The important thing is to make sure it is in (the example image given on the page are in Italian which is a good sign) and it can be moved later (the main work on the English-language one is moving or removing ones that don't fit). Sources can often be quite suprising and often convoluted when there are a lot of spin-offs (last year I helped sort out Battle Royale which had often got complicated) - some Japanese films I assumed were based on manga were actually based on an original novel (often also adapated into manga) and others (like Oldboy) was a suprise when I started looking into it. Dark Horse Comics are doing a good job releasing the originals. (Emperor 17:46, 18 February 2007 (UTC))
Merge
[edit]As this is a bit complicated I have put the merge discussion here if you want to add anything. (Emperor 05:54, 2 March 2007 (UTC))
Merge 2
[edit]- merge List of films based on Comics characters is all here (or its child entries) or List of films based on comic strips so there is no real need for it. I suggest we sift it and move what is not covered to relevant sections and then turn it into a redirect. (Emperor 19:55, 15 May 2007 (UTC))
- Merge --Jamdav86 12:55, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
- Merge Completed -- Info from "List of films based on comics characters" was moved to List of films based on English-language comics and page was redirected to List of films based on comics -- 69.182.73.240 06:11, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
El Muerto
[edit]Please note that the film, El Muerto, is an english-language film made in the United States- based off an American comic created by Javier Hernandez.
- I see you've removed it. I've added it into List of films based on English-language comics. (Emperor 22:22, 14 June 2007 (UTC))
