Added Links
[edit]Added David Bowie, Scott Walker, and Jacques Brel. They may be classic Cabaret, but they are all dark nonetheless. Also added Vernian Process (has performed with Jill Tracy). --FACT50 19:36, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
Some minor fixes
[edit]I don't think 16 Horsepower belongs under cabaret, but rather, dark country, or alternative folk/country.

Some minor fixes-2
[edit]Zydepunks - folk/punk rock, Sopor Aeternus - german darkwave with pseudo-medieval/folk influences. They are not "cabaret-tuned" bands !
- I'm not familiar with Zyedpunks, but Sopor Aeternus certainly does not belong in a cabaret list. --FACT50 18:31, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
Capitalisation
[edit]Just a minor thing, but why is 'Dark' capitalised in the title of this article? Would a better title not be List of dark cabaret artists? Sorry, this is just something that really bugs me. J Milburn 20:51, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
Not Dark Cabaret
[edit]I don't see why Emo/pop bands like My Chemical Romance, and Panic! at the Disco are in this list? They may have a somewhat vaudeville appearance, but the music does not reflect a cabaret sound in any way. FACT50 01:58, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
- Beirut is a folk band. There is no reason for it to be on this list.
This page is a shambles Bowie ? , My chemical romance?? I will fix this tomorrow - —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.203.38.112 (talk) 02:04, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
- Heavily trimmed. This was a list of people who were either cabaret or dark but not both, or just of anybody who'd ever worn clown makeup. Paul S (talk) 14:25, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
- How is Abney Park, a gothic rock band with oriental influences dark cabaret? Further, how is Anthony and the Johnsons, which doesn't fit the cabaret/vaudeville style at all there? My final question. MINDLESS SELF INDULGENCE?! WTF!?
- There is a band called Mindless Self Indulgence who might be described as Dark Cabaret. Abney Park are steampunk, though. Someone has also added Emilie Autumn, who doesn't really belong either, but removing her will probably start an edit war. Paul S (talk) 11:01, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
- Okay, first of all, 'steampunk' is a subculture, NOT a musical genre - Abney Park uses the image of steampunk, that is all (not so different from the Neo-Victorian sensibilities of Unextraordinary Gentlemen, Vernian Process and Clockwork Dolls). Further, I KNOW there is 'a band called Mindless Self Indulgence' and Mindless Self Indulgence is anything BUT dark cabaret. Within what fucked up parameters of reason does THIS fit into the scheme of things!?
- Mindless Self Indulgence's Stupid MF has people in white face. For some, this is enough to put them on the list. I wouldn't have, but I've not yet been made Dictator of Dark Cabaret (with an army of fawning minions in stripey stockings) Yes, there's not (yet) a "steampunk sound" (I've only heard 2 bands: Abney Park and Ghostfire) Trim the list further if there are any more bands you're more familiar with who don't belong. Questionable Additions
[edit]Melanie Garside/Maple Bee and Marina & the Diamonds, for instance, are not and never have been Dark Cabaret. Please pay attention to the two words "dark" and "cabaret". It's not a list of people with eyeliner whose music doesn't feature electric guitars... Paul S (talk) 20:54, 2 June 2009 (UTC)
- Same with Panic! at the Disco - just because they made that funny video with the Dresden Dolls doesn't mean they're a DC band. Paul S (talk) 18:37, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
Black Tape for a Blue Girl: they have always been "goth" and now it appears that they've completely changed the lineup in order to go for a cabaret sound. However, until this new album is released in September, we don't have anything but the synthy, gothy stuff to classify them. Maybe they can be added later this year. Paul S (talk) 10:21, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
- ...and having heard two tracks from 10 Neurotics I'd say they still can't be added. I don't know what to call it ("dark hippy"?!) but there's no discernable cabaret influence at all. Paul S (talk) 20:19, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
And will people please stop adding Evelyn Evelyn? The backstory is may be "dark" but the music isn't and cabaret is certainly not their predominant style. Paul S (talk) 01:32, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
- Evelyn Evelyn style is definitely cabaret and many of their songs are dark cabaret. Lentower (talk) 02:06, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
- The only Dark Cabaret is A Campaign of Shock and Awe. The rest is comedy; You Only Want Me 'Cause You Want My Sister is obviously C&W style. Paul S (talk) 01:43, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
Emilie Autumn
[edit]Behold the LORD will surely punish those who keep adding Emilie Autumn to this list. Seriously, Emilie Autumn describes her brand of music as "Victoriandustrial" which means it at once pre- and post-dates cabaret, making use of synths and drum machines. She owes nothing to the cabaret tradition and her work in no way resembles cabaret. This is, once again, not a list of everyone who ever looked a bit gothy and doesn't play an electric guitar. Paul S (talk) 22:12, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
- I hate people who assume that the self titulation matters more then the music they actually play…
- Her music (not all songs, but many) Dark Cabaret, she has dark lyrics and musically many influences from Vaudeville, Cabaret, Musical… Plus her outfits are very Cabaret inspired (Corsetts, high, visible Stockings, High Low Skirts…) 87.139.20.65 (talk) 09:15, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
Well that is extremely questionable since many dark cabaret artists, such as the clockwork dolls and unwoman name her as an influence and what is dark cabaret anyway, it has to do more with the aesthethics of the music than with the music itself, if not how can you put in the same musical genre so many contrasting artists such as Voltaire, Hannah Fury, The dresden dolls and Jill Tracy. You could argue endlessly that humanwine's heavy percussions and 'gypsy' melodic passages doesn't make them dark cabaret because they don't have the florid instrumentation of Voltaire and Jill Tracy, or that Rasputina is no Dark Cabaret because they don't sound a bit like the dresden dolls, or you could even balantly say that The Dresden Dolls is no dark cabaret because they don't sound a f*ck like the music made in the 20's which is the original idea of Dark Cabaret, but there is absolutely no point point of saying it because all those bands are encompassed in the concept of theatralizing and mocking today's sociaty by making a joke of its darkest sides and using anachronism as a tool to look the basis of the same and its possible future and so is Emilie Autumn.189.151.32.10 (talk) 08:26, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
- The Dolls are not the basis of Dark Cabaret, but EA still falls well outside the ambit. Paul S (talk) 23:42, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
- Someone adds her yet again citing an Italian article which talks of "sounds that can be called a mixture of synthpop and dark cabaret" but it labels her as "New goth" twice and points out her self-definition as "Victoriandustrial". Curiously this contributor did not add EA to the list of synthpop artists... Paul S (talk) 01:46, 30 December 2012 (UTC)
- Reviewing your contributions here, it seems as though you may want to review Wikipedia's policy on ownership of articles. I've added an additional reference, although the one I added before was perfectly sufficient. Best, IronGargoyle (talk) 07:21, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
- My contributions, as on any list, are to prevent spurious additions. Go back over the history of this page and see how many there have been. Go and read the Spanish article on Dark Cabaret and see how many are still there, suggesting either that the Spanish speaking world doesn't understand what the genre is or has a significantly different understanding of it, making your citation of a Spanish article (nobody seems to be able to find an English citation for the addition of this English speaking artist into a page on the English language Wikipedia, wonder why?) I also note you have reinserted the Italian article as a ref - why haven't you added EA to the list of synthpop artists|? Paul S (talk) 18:16, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

Amanda Palmer
[edit]The more of her solo work I hear, the more I question whether she should be in the category of Dark Cabaret. It is, as you point out, different from the Dolls - so different I don't think it can fit in the same slot... Paul S (talk) 12:00, 1 December 2009 (UTC)
- If anything her solo work is more dark carbaret, than her work with the Dresden Dolls. The project's title is Who Killed Amanda Palmer, the songs, live performances on tour with the Danger Ensemble, music videos, and the book are all dark, with dark carbaret themes. I added her and Brian Viglione back to the Dresden Dolls' entry. It hurts nothing to have her listed twice, for substantially different work, and also gets Brian a little more credit. Lentower (talk) 01:14, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
- Hmm, fair enough - Sex Gang Children and Andi Sex Gang are listed separately. Paul S (talk) 17:19, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
