Talk:List of cycling topics
This is an interesting list, but what it the inclusion criteria, and how is it different from the two outlines that already exist, other than it is alphabetical instead of grouped by topic? More pointedly, I guess, how is this not just a content fork? -AndrewDressel (talk) 12:50, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
- I have drawn up this list from the "== see also ==" sections of all the articles that appear in this list. Another way around this is to include/insert the artiles list in the appropriate navboxes. Peter Horn User talk 14:30, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
- It would help if you would give me the names as well as the links to those two lists, because I was not really aware of their existence. Any way the articles in the List of cycling topics could be grouped in sections by topics. See also Talk:List of cycling topics#List of cycling topics. Peter Horn User talk 14:40, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
- First, thanks for replying. Second, I've taken the liberty of copying your comments from User talk:Peter Horn#List of cycling topics to here so that we can have this conversation all in one place. Now, on to your question. The two existing articles that are already attempting to do what it sounds like this new article is attempting to do are outline of bicycles and outline of cycling. There are also the categories for bicycles and cycling, and this navigation box
- I think this new list might be a helpful addition, but I think that will require a careful curation of articles that are actually topics, not just an alphabetical list of all the articles found in see also sections. Once we start grouping things into sections, then this becomes more of an outline than a list. -AndrewDressel (talk) 15:10, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
For example, these are the "topics" that might make sense to list in a list of cycling topics:
- Outline of bicycles
- Outline of cycling
- Bicycle culture
- Bicycle drivetrain systems
- Bicycle law
- Bicycle parking
- Bicycle rental
- Bicycle safety
- Bicycle transportation engineering
- Cycling advocacy
- Cycling infrastructure
- History of the bicycle
- History of cycling
- Segregated cycle facilities
- Utility cycling
- Vehicular cycling
Plus all the lists currently included in the see also section for this article. -AndrewDressel (talk) 18:50, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
- Those on my list that actually are cycling topics could be included in the "navbox cycling" above if they are not already included there. As for the different types of bicycles, tricycles, velocipedes etc. the could be transferred from my list to the existing one if they do not already appear there, ditto for bicycles. A quick look through there told me that some "cycles" are not yet listed there. So my list could possibly be modified, by transferring every article in it that is not a "cycling topic" to an appropriate already existing list, a navbox or a category as the case may be. In the near future I hope to extract every cycle from my list so that we can see what is not yet included in the category. Right now I lack the time. Remember that my list is now linked to most, but not all, articles mentioned in the list as shown in the "== See also ==" sections. Peter Horn User talk 20:07, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
- I did notice that you had linked to this new list from many other articles, so that kept me from doing anything brash. If we decide that everything here can go elsewhere, we can edit this down to just a redirect to take advantage of a lot of the work you've already done. -AndrewDressel (talk) 20:44, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
- That would still allow for sorting within the list as I have done just now. All the "cycling in" articles have a section about infrastructure. Bicycle transportation engineering is in part about the construction of segregated cycle facilities. All the articles about the types of bikes etc. could be grouped together. Peter Horn User talk 23:38, 7 August 2013 (UTC)
- Sorting and grouping all makes perfect sense, which is also the motivation for the pair of outline articles. Perhaps some sort of a merger is in order. -AndrewDressel (talk) 23:48, 7 August 2013 (UTC)

- We can work on that but I'm hitting the sack now. Peter Horn User talk 05:16, 8 August 2013 (UTC) Peter Horn User talk 05:16, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
Nothing about racing?
[edit]How can a list of cycling topics not include links to bicycle racing and major races? 99.245.230.104 (talk) 06:38, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
- As you can see in the discussion above, the inclusion criteria for this list is a little fuzzy. Never-the-less, the list already contains links to:
- If you think more are necessary, please add them. -AndrewDressel (talk) 13:38, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
Merge
[edit]I split the article and merged it into the two comprehensive outlines on these subjects:
- Outline of bicycles (covers the equipment)
- Outline of cycling (covers the activity)
