Article name change

I have changed all "Chief Ministers of foo" to "Chief Minister of foo" as that is the proper naming scheme. Incidentally, if they are only meant to be lists the proper naming is "List of the Chief Ministers of foo" so someone can change them all to that if they are only going to be lists and never describe the position. gren グレン 16:22, 19 August 2005 (UTC)

I have moved the pages that were only lists (exception of Rajasthan) to pages that have prefix "List of". When someone will come up with sufficient content on them, he/she will edit the redirect page to make the article concern. coalitions

i think there should be some mention of the governments propped up by coailitions. it's deceptive to say they are from their party, which indicated it's their own party rule. Lihaas (talk) 09:56, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

This was remvoed without reason. And the map in theere before was better. This should also be there. And this was removed without any reason whatsoever, the old was more pertinent as it has more details.(Lihaas (talk) 15:09, 12 October 2013 (UTC)).

Please don't abruptly change a featured list wholesale; as you can see, there was a lot of scrutiny on the article and a consensus emerged for this version.

As for alliances, if you haven't read the note already ("This column only names the chief minister's party. The state government he heads may be a complex coalition of several parties and independents; these are not listed here."), the reasons are:

1. This is a list of chief ministers, not of the state govts he heads. A CM belongs to a single party; alliances refer to the composition of the govt.
2. These can become incredibly complex. Are party A and B in an alliance? Or is party B merely supporting party A from the outside? Are any independents supporting/part of the govt?
3. Naming: is the Maharashtra govt a UPA govt? Or just Indian National Congress + Nationalist Congress Party? Similarly for the Punjab govt (NDA or just SAD+BJP). In Tripura, is it a Left Front govt even though the CPI (M) alone holds 49 out of 50 seats in that coalition?
4. Sources: another point is--alliances have no official recognition. None of the govt websites (election commission, state assemblies etc) give this info in concrete terms. So where do we source this info from?
5. How do we deal with alliances that have been formed/broken in the middle of the CM's tenure? For eg: Naveen Patnaik quit the NDA in the middle of his tenure.

As you can see, adding alliances is a complex matter and beyond the scope of this article. Please don't remove discussion tags without discussion and consensus at that.

Firstly, there was no discussion whatsoever on changing the map. Such changes when challenged, by BRD, need discussion and consensus. There was NO discussion here.

The note had no discussion either and was unilaterally done. BOLD maybe till challenged.

If this is a list of CMs and not the govts then why include his party and any other info? Party's that have CMs come to power as a result of coalitions and are very important in their formation as it would not exist otherwise.

They are not complex, they were there in the previous version the same way (or see the map)

As an accommodation then we can at least tag if as part of a coalition or party rule instead of naming it? Using a key at the bottom ofr a "small" reference that it is in a coalition.

Deal with normally as in who is in the new coalition, who is the new leader. Simpl e. As in Patnaik, it would change to indicate a BJD govt? Not difficult.

No discussion? Except that this article went through a rigorous FLC, with some half-a-dozen editors weighing in. Also you challenged my edits to the article some eight months after I made them. WP:BRD applies to your edits, not mine. Thus, I am restoring the map. (also the map's assertions of alliances in some states are not backed up by any sources in the article)

Case in point: we had disagreements whether Ms. Dikshit was still CM of Delhi. As for alliances, given they have no statutory recognition, this will get ugly in no time. For this, just look at the current AAP govt in Delhi. Are they in an alliance with the Congress (as BJP alleges), or is Congress merely giving outside support (as Congress claims), or is AAP going it alone (as they themselves seem to be suggesting). Even reliable sources will differ widely on this, because nobody can really know.

It all comes down to the highly finicky and unstable nature of regional Indian politics. I urge you to look at Aaya Ram Gaya Ram to get an idea of this.

Why CMs who resign after an election defeat shouldn't immediately be removed from the list

An incumbent CM who's been thumped at the election will almost immediately submit his resignation to the governor. However, given that the new one is around a week away from being sworn in, the governor does not accept the resignation. (because the CM position shouldn't be vacant) Thus the lame-duck remains nominally in charge for a few more days.

For eg: Karnataka's Jagadish Shettar resigned on the 8th of May, but the official govt website says he was CM till the 12th, the day on which his successor was sworn in.—Indopug 122.172.27.199 (talk) 16:26, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

TR Zeliang

TR Zeliang was expelled from the NPF after he took the oath as CM. Shouldn't he be considered as an independent legislator? Bharatiya29 11:18, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

He is still the leader of NPF in the house unless he conducts fresh elections as an independent candidate or forms a new party with his legislators or merges into another political party as he has the support of 2/3rd of the total legislators from NPF. The constitutional validity of his expulsion can be contested and hence until there is no clear decision on the same he remains a member of NPF. Amal biyani (talk) 07:39, 27 July 2017 (UTC)

Change in the map

Note on past chief ministership

Hello all and especially @Indopug:! Should we add foot note for entries where the person has been CM before also; but not consecutively. Like Patnaik has been CM of Odisha consecutively and his tenure is seen long enough. But Yeddyurappa, Gehlot, Zoramthanga, Amarinder Singh and may be more have been CMs before too although their current tenure seems small. I don't see the use of it. This is a simple list of who is currently CM and since when they've held the post (and this itself can be hard enough as is the case now with the situation in Karnataka!). Coalition with Congress in TN?

The current Government of Tamil Nadu is formed by the DMK only. However, the map image in the lead shows Tamil Nadu is light blue, despite the DMK being listed under red color in the footnote. What is this? The one responsible for their, please fix this image please or I will have to remove the image entirely to help prevent misinformation. BawinV (talk) 09:35, 7 May 2021 (UTC)

President's rule in West Bengal

An incorrect edit was made regarding imposition of President's rule on 19th May. While a plea is currently under consideration at the Supreme Court, no such decision has been implemented.
