"Historical"? Comment

[edit]

@Hwy43: I don't understand your use of the word 'historical' in this article. I can perhaps see where you are coming from in terms of describing their administration, but that I feel is really better done at List of municipalities in Nova Scotia. In reality, these counties do still exist, not only in the mind of StatsCan as you point out, but geographically and culturally too; there are also NGO's that represent the whole county; there are markers or welcome signs on the highways. So for example, while Pictou County, Nova Scotia is administered not by one body but by five town councils and one rural council, they do share some services and together they make up the the whole of Pictou County, whose boundaries are well defined, and is usually referred to as a whole.

I am hoping that you can explain your use of the term 'historical' and we can find a better way forward for this article. I came to it looking to check for links to the really historical county of Sydney (now Antigonish co and Guysborough co). The history of NS counties is complex; Halifax co originally encompassed all of eastern NS. [1] That is an article that needs writing, I'm just not sure if this is the right place.--Derek Andrews (talk) 15:16, 21 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct that the history of counties in Nova Scotia is complex. Pictou County is an example that doesn't represent the problem that needed to be overcome. Based on my extensive research in support of the article overhaul, there are six counties that have each been split into two districts and thus the six counties no longer fit within the originally intended county system. We don't want this article to accidentally convey that the six historical counties in question are administered in the same manner as the majority of the others that continue to largely be administered in a manner similar to that as originally intended. The "historical" qualifier is not harmful and establishes an umbrella term to cover all counties as they exist today, whether administered by county municipalities, regional municipalities, or pairs of district municipalities. If there is a better term, by all means propose an alternative for discussion. Note I am not very active at the moment, so it may take time for me to respond to future posts, but I do intend to respond. Hwy43 (talk) 01:22, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
